Ice fishing with Flies!

Post by janesy »

Been playing with flies the last couple times I've been out. Great low profile tactic when the bites are light!

That's thinking "outside the box". Good for you.

The most extreme "outside the box" thinking I've ever heard of was by one of our local characters. He used (with some success) 220 Connibear traps with kernel corn on the trigger....ice fishing. It wasn't legal here, but what lawmaker would even dream his law would apply to such an oddball stunt.
"Gun Control Laws"--trying to nag criminals into submission.

Can't take credit for the idea. I invited a buddy out last week and said I'd take care off all the gear, he just has to show up. I said I've got plenty of tackle.

He said. "Meh, I'll just tie a fly on!"
I must have looked half baked for a minute, it was like getting hit in the head with a frying pan. Why wouldn't you tie a fly on? That's what they eat

I have been nailing the gills with tiny lead head jigs tied fly style and a wax worm on back for many years.

One of my favorite ice fishing tricks when the fish are lazy is to use a big dragon fly nymph over a sunken logs or brush. I get laughed at till I pull a hog out. Then they ask if I have spares. Tight lines,

I just put a wax worm on these and adjust knot after every fish so jig sets horizontal and the bluegills nail the heck out of em
