Thanks Gary,
Anyways here is the story, went to leave my stand a little early two Saturdays ago. I quietly jumped the fence and stepped out into the field looked to the right and saw nothing looked to the left and there he was 50 yards away with the head down. It was at that point i realised i had no arrow in my bow. So i promptly loaded an arrow in my bow and saw that it was a field point ! ( OH S@$# i thought. )
So I finally get a rocket aerohead loaded and look back over at the deer, he is still 50 yards away but he has his head up looking in the opposite direction at my Dad coming from his stand. So he bolts running parallel towards me out about 20 yards. I waited till he was broadside and yelled BAHHHH!!! then he stopped dead and stared at me. I put the bow on him and heard the THWACK !! of the arrow and then he was gone........
Walked over towards my dad and he is whistling telling me he just saw a large buck go flying past him that ran 500 yards across his field and went into the cedars. Just then its begins starting to pour rain !!!
(M@&*%ER F@&%ER ) I thought.
So we go back to the house, have a beer get the big light and the powerpack and give the deer 1.5 hours so as not to push him. Once we get to where we last saw him I see a huge pile of bright red blood ...... and the rains stops. ( It was at this point i was 100% sure i was getting this deer and needed a smoke to calm down ) as I figured he would be just inside the treeline........ After following the heaviest blood trail i have ever seen for 800 yards through the woods out to a plowed field and heading across it, I was feeling a little uneasy when it started to rain again. Especially since not once had the deer bedded down anywhere but was bleeding steady. After a 1000 yards out into the field, a now thinning blood trail, and a power pack getting low on batteries i was worried and figured my chances of getting the deer were quickly diminishing.
It was at that point we could see the road another 400 yards away and trailed the deer across the road were 50 yards on the other side he lay dead on a fence line. This was when we discovered that a coyote had been chasing him and had already eaten about 4-5 pounds out of the neck and that was why the deer had bolted from where we left him.
Needless to say from the pictures I was pumped and much beer / whiskey was consumed over the next 48 hours celebrating.
It turned out to be a pass through neck shot, severing a portion of the wind pipe. When i bahhed at the deer he looked at me and then when the limbs snapped he tried to turn a 180 which but his head / neck right in front of his lungs in the path of the arrow.
The best part of this is that had if he died where we left him it would of been a minimum 1000 yards drag and thus turned out out to be 50. I'll take that trade for 5 pounds of neck meat any time.
Anyways he dresses 192 lbs and will be almost all sausage with the head going on the wall. Good luck to everyone else, Ive got one more tag left and know where there is 2 bucks bigger than this one that have my name on em.
Oh yeah saw a nice approx 175lb - 8 pointer last night but let him walk ... Gotta have one for next year in case we get those other two.
