Bare bones sight

Post by striper »

When I bought my Exocet 3 years ago, out of ignorance, I bought the package that included a Maxzone scope. Stupid and ignorant, I hunted with it for almost 2 seasons until someone told me that it was illegal (and still is) to use a magnifying device on a bow in Alabama. This year, I investigated the Aimpoint and Red dot scopes, but was told by Bill T. that the light gathering ability of these scopes was inferior.
I decided to hunt with the little dinky sight that comes with the bow this year with great trepidation. I really didn't think that I could see well enough through it to shoot accurately. On the second day of bow season this year, I got a shot with it, and made one of the best shots that I have ever made with a bow! I guess I will stick with it until the law is changed since I am not going to spend a hundred dollars or more for an inferior scope. Does anyone else on the forum hunt with the sight that comes with the bow? Striper

Striper,

I hunt my Exocet with a Red Dot.
It's true, it's light gathering ability is equivalent to it's ability to magnify!!!!

But don't let that stop you.
Learn to use this Red Dot correctly and you can pretty much use it the dark!!!!!!!!

Use it with both eyes open and at it's lowest light intensity, and you will find that there is absolutley nothing else out there that give's such a beautiful picture acquistion.

A tiny bright red dot on a dark background.

Even the best scopes can gather light. However, the black crosshairs are lost against a darkened back ground.

Also, understand what agenda some may have in their recommendation.

My recommendation to you has nothing to do with selling product

I still use the peep and pins that came with my vixen 6 years ago. I can still 10 ring at 23 yards.

SpartaJim used a red dot rear sight with the stock fiber optic front sight, and thought very highly of it. I haven't tried it myself. Too bad he's gone, he is missed. Maybe if you search the archives you can find one of his posts about it.

I shoot my exocet with that simple sight.
I haven't hunted with it though.

From the rifle world (and I don't see how bows would be different)
if you can shoot with iron sigths you can with optical ones.
high magnification doesn't make you a better shooter, most shooters
experience an illusion that if they see hairs on that deer with 20x scope
they'd shoot better - nonsense. It makes some people shoot worse -
trying to compensate for vibrations etc.

You know people shoot 1000 yards with iron sights.
In Afganistan they still shoot Lee Enfield 303 with iron sights with
great siccess ;-(((

One advantage to the optics is improved range estimation.

I used the peep & pin for the first couple hunts and like its simplicity. Killed a hog (the one that bit me :o) a couple weeks ago. I had a red dot laying around and have mounted it for the past couple hunts. If you keep both eyes open as one suggested it is execllent in low light. I don't shoot any better with it than the orig sights & miss their simplicity. Forgot to turn the RD on once and had it go dead on me another time. They (orig sights) do have some clutter and are hard to watch the arrow with. I don't like magnification on a bow sight anyway, just as I refuse to use a scope on a muzzle loader or mount one for my customers (I'm a gunsmith). Nothing wrong with that peep that comes with the exocet.

I have a scope for my emag, but the darn thing is harder to see when the animal is at close range or in rain it can be really annoying.

I truely prefer the open fiber optic sight that Bill T. puts on the bows from the factory.

I have killed numerous deer with the open sight and it's very accurate, fast and easy to use.

The Exag really doesn't need a scope in my opinion.

I used the factory pin sight from '97 until last year on my Exocet. I've now replaced the front pin with a new style sight that has a ring with 4 marks sort of like a crosshair around the green fiber optic dot. You center the front ring in the rear peep, and that's it. It's quicker than a straight pin to line up and I shoot more accurately with it. I think I've taken 8 deer now with just the single front pin sighted in at 20yds. on the Exocet. Works for me.
I sometimes have really close shots in thick cover and have hesitated trying to use a scope for that reason.
Get this: Our state (Illinois) has just approved the use of laser red dot sights for crossbows. I'm shocked and amazed the socialist republic of Illinois made the ruling in favor of the lasers. They must *really* want the deer population knocked down. I plan on getting one...yesterday!
