Inspect your turkeys folks! (Graphic images)

Post by janesy »

Took a nice Tom yesterday morning on a quick spot and stock hunt. On first glance everything looked fine. I did notice that it wasn't strutting, its spurs were still razor sharp, and its belly had no signs of breeding. Turkey was hit clean in the head, and the images are on the oposite side from where it was shot.

While breasting the birdy on my tailgate I came across something, at first glance there was nothing out of the ordinary until I got down into where the breast meat and the wing meet up. After I plucked the feathers from the armpit, the skin was turning green, and there was scab as you can see. There was no odour, or any sign of infection or turned meat.

At first when I was cleaning it it apeared to be trauma from an injury, but after cleaning the meat further there was lots of black thick blood in the veins through out the breast meat. There were no pellets or other sign of being previously shot. Aside from the scab
This could also be simply a form of deep tissue myopathy that big birds are often subject to when they try to fly too hard or fast. Essential they pull the muscles and it dies from the inside out . which is harmless to the person eating it.

Problem is you dont get to know. Anyone else ever come across this?

This would have been very easy to miss if you like to cook your birds whole.

It looks like it took a pellet to me in the 3rd picture I think I can see the pellet 3/4 of the frame to the right in the middle looks like a deformed lead shot pellet.
Congratulations on the fine bird.

Thats a spot where I cut through the little thin meat and its folded over the outside skin, the grey is a feather behing the hole. The reason the joint is so bloody is that I did cut through there looking for a stray pellet as that what I was also expecting. But I could not find anything.
It almost looked like it the bird was flying over head and it took a pellet right in the armpit. But unless it went into the guts, I couldn't find it.

Thanks Billy! Hate to waste it, but without knowing or at least finding evidence of what it was... I sealed and froze the meat, but I must admit I'm hesitant to eat it.

Nice bird congratulations!!
I see what Gerald is talking about in regards to a pellet, looks possible.
I would also suspect that during this time of year when these birds are fighting for a hen
that a sharp spur from a adversary can do substantial damage to a Tom. I am sure most of
us have watched some pretty brutal fights between these bad boys.
Take care.

Beauty bird!

I have seen what a bullet or pellet in an animal can do over time if it wasn't a kill shot. Puss and green slime in the affected area. Very gross indeed. I had a buck that had a slug logged in the back strap. Gross!!

I called the MNR and they said cut around it and the rest is safe to eat. They were correct because I'm still here... lol

I think your right Jeff, the shoulder joint makes the pic look much worse than it was. After I went throught it a few times with the blade it got pretty bloody.

Thank you for posting. Did you call it in? Here in Arkansas our season comes in so late, very few turkeys will work. A call will often send them the other way.
