Stand theft prevention

Post by longbow joe »

I hunt on private property. ..but that dont mean much. I basically camouflage my ladderstands real good with brush n wire ties .l also "bolt" the sections togeather instead of the pins to make it harder to disassemble. And last but not least a big 1/2 inch thick giant rusty industrial chain and lock. I have cut theft to a minimum. Does anyone have any anti theft secrets you want to share ... im all ears. Lbj

Joe, even on our leases I choose to haul in a climber. Dumb, hard core, whatever you wish to call me, but never had one of those stolen. LOL. We have had several ladder stands, and hang on style ripped off over the years even on private property. All I can say is do what you can to detour the thieves, but still hold your breath!

I prevent theft by making minimizing the value of the target. My hang on stands are all the sub-$50 variety and the climbing sticks to get to them are the same. I chain the stand to the tree. It is a lot of work to put them up and even to maintain them annually. Since they are so cheap, I've never had anyone bother them. They accurately look old and inexpensive.

I also have a two-person 12ft ladder stand that is a hernia maker, or widow maker. Anyone that tries to steal it would be doing me a favor and would likely be found at the bottom of the tree under a pile of metal.

In all seriousness, the stands I leave in the woods aren't worth much. When I did leave a nice climber out overnight, I locked it to the tree with a cable lock.

Here in nc pa most use climber!

Ladderstands are no good fir archery as you have to move a lot on stateland!
Gun season ladderstands are fine and no one bothers them in gun season!!
Most times they twist a ladderstand around tree!
Or take stabilizer bar!
Heavy chain on seat and cheap ladderstand is best way in gun season!
I carry in my top section of my summit climber and use it on my ladderstand I can fall asleep in it ,its good for all day and easy to carry out !
If me i would buy those$49 dollar ladderstands and carry in top section of summit climber and take it out with you!
Its great fir me in cold, wind, trees moving in winter, climb up ladderstand, snap on summit seat top and fall asleep if you like!
Found out its too much work in winter climbing trees at zero temps in dark and tired!!!

The only anti-theft method that is 100% is to carry it in and out with you. They can't steal what isn't there.

Wait until they take a battery operated sawzall to the ladder! Ask me all about it, I had 4 stands cut with one.

I hunt ` private land and have had trouble with theft .... For my hang on stands , I have added a bar to the up rights that mount the platform to base . About the mid point I weld a 1 X 3/8 ths piece of flat stock drill a 3/8 inch hole and use a lag bolt to secure it to the tree. Thieves usually have bolt cutters but not a wrench . I do the same to ladder stands ...So far so good .

I also use bolts with nylock nuts to hold the sections of a ladder stand together.

The only thing I can add is location, location, location. I try to hunt as far from the road as possible in the thickest stuff around. I had one guy tell me as he met me on the road where I walk in- he started to walk in but turned around because it is all up hill to get to the ridge and the National Forest was cut a few years ago and you have to get through some thick stuff to get in the area opens up to hunt. I have lost keys to my cable locks and used bolt cutters on them. The other option is to put a game camera up to keep an eye on your stand; it won't prevent theft just help you find out who took it. I also use a king kong cable lock (not sure they still sell them) and bolt my sections together with a lock I found in automotive section at Walmart. It makes it hard to get a bolt cutter on them. One guy put his tree stand next to the road 30 yards form the pond. The stand was not stolen just damaged. But what is crazy all the trees around it were cut down. It took all the cover away ruining the hunting spot.

There's not too many ways to stop them from being stolen, so the next best thing it to make them unusable to the thieves. My ladder was held on by nut and bolt, I used quick release pins and carry 3 sections of ladder out when I'm done hunting. I do have to exercise caution when going up without the pins to secure the ladder, but I only need to go up about 4 feet up to insert them. Once they're in I can secure the stand safely. It's a little inconvenient, but it's still there!
