Maximum Bolt/Broadhead weight for Matrix 350LE?

Post by Cadeuses »

Weight-Matching the broadhead to the field points is essential in ensuring accuracy when the time comes to make the shot on the intended animal or target.

This fact I was aware of in my experience with archery spanning some 38 years and running. I've likely forgotten more about archery than I remember today. Is that old age settling in?

Anyway, what I am looking for from my post, refers to something I recall hearing about; that there is a limit to how heavy a broadhead/bolt combination can be (taking into account the spine of the bolt shaft in relation to head weight). I already know about the minimum arrow weight (350 gr for my crossbow as recommended by Excalibur) being something to adhere to.

To clarify; I'm using 18" Easton Carbon "Diablo" bolts, shot from an Excalibur Matrix 350LE at an average speed of 375fps (with 125gr heads).

So, IS there too heavy a weighted bolt for crossbow bolts that one should stay under or not?

Thanks and have a great day!

Your correct on the min. wt. is 350 gr..
Now with that said, don't know if there is a max. wt. as I'm at 450 gr. total wt. with a 125 gr. broad head, & some on here shoot 500 gr. or more. A few things with a heavy arrow is they help quite your crossbow, yes your speed will drop, but FOC will go up & so will pass through's on larger size game. Deer is not the problem, its wild hogs, bear, elk, these type of game. If your arrow will pass through these animals, and kill them, deer will be no problem. Some fellow shooting compound bows are shooting 500 to 700 gr. total wt. arrows.

IMO don't get all tied up in the thinking your field points & broad heads need to shoot the same. I make sure my broad heads shoot on point, since that is what I use to kill my game. So it really doesn't matter that the two heads shoot different.

Hope some one that knows more will chime in.

Welcome to the forum! My thinking is you could shoot as heavy as you want but don’t go under 350 gr! Did you get the 375fps by shooting through a chronograph or is that what the speed ring says

I am currently shooting 448 grain arrows out of my 350 LE. They slow it down a lot but it shoots quieter and hits extremely hard. The arrows fly likes darts also.

I'd go with 20" Black Eagle Executioner .001 110gr front insert factory fletched for this bow.
That's what I use and they're very accurate.

I know there are some guys loading up arrows to 5-600 grain for bison and such. I can't remember the weight for BillT's elephant.
So no I do to think there is a solid line you cannot cross. But certainly a line would eventually have to be drawn that represents the best of both world and more importantly the game you are using them on.
I like to hover around 400. I have some in 390, some at 400, and some at 420. This year I built them at 400 exactly and they seem to hit pretty hard.

I'm using black eagle zombie slayers with 150 grain slick tricks and I'm very happy with the setup.

I’m shooting 18” BEE’s out of my 350LE 421grs @ 321fps. Shooting lights out to 60yds.
I’d like to know what # limbs you have shooting 375fps...best I could do out of mine was 345fps with a 357gr arrow. :|

I own a 350 and shoot 18 1/4 inch bolts, 2219 Aluminum shafts , aluminum insert in front and flat plastic nock in back with a discontinued 175 gr slick trick 4 blade broad head total weight of 484 gr, very heavy but very accurate , very hard hitting, and absorbs a lot of sound and blast through everything pointed at.

Hi georgiaboy. I actually don't know what # limbs I have on my 350LE to be honest. A lot of the online searching about the 350LE didn't really give me many answers. There were vague statements about the 350LE being a cut-down version of the old 405, as there was a problem with the trigger not holding on the old 405. Maybe I got a pair of 405 limbs, who knows?

I agree whole heartedly with your statement gerald strine. I think accuracy is more important in archery than how fast the arrow is travelling.
