Turkey down

Post by gerald strine »

Michigan has a fall turkey season for ether sex birds it is my preferred season as it is longer than the spring hunt and I often see turkeys while hunting deer but I often do not get issued a fall tag as they are limited and in high demand. last year no tag and I had several close encounters with birds deer hunting this year I scored a tag !
I took Friday off work to bow hunt get out at 1st light to a well soaked hard woods it has done nothing but rain since the opener on the 1st , the woods are dropping a bumper crop of acorns this year and the rain had stopped for a spell .
Sitting on the ground no blind my preferred style on public land for the first hour and a half no deer or turkeys but the squirrels are working over time .
Then I hear a turkey fly down from roost quite a ways off then eventually hear three more fly down out of sight but I know the sound of turkeys coming down from roost. so now my hopes are up but most often the birds feed in the opposite direction from past hunts their.
Well about an hour goes by and I had figured that they had worked in the other direction but would use the intell for the next hunt when I start getting glimpses of them feeding straight at me !
I am trying to grow beards on them as I catch looks at them as they are getting closer but but no Toms could be had the lead bird gets at 20 yards and pauses a moment and had a facing me shot I put the 20 yard dot on her upper chest and fired a 2219 aluminum with a 175 gr 4 blade slick trick I knew I had a hard hit the bird flopped around a few seconds and died in ten feet of ware hit !
The other birds did not scatter at the shot as is often the case with the x bow but did a puk puk, kee kee sounds fot the next 40 min.
I let them work out of the area before recocking my bow as I wanted to finish deer hunting I just let the bird lay until I was ready to leave for the day.
I did see a two doe that spooked down wind of me but no opportunity their.
On recovering of the bird I hit her ware the neck joins the body and exited breaking the base of the wing, I found the bolt 20 yards beyond pretty much buried under leaf litter .
