How far do the heavy boreal forests extend north in to Ontario before turning to treeless tundra??
I would guess that this tundra line would mark the northern most region of the whitetail's travels. Yes/no??
Thanks.

Just found this site. (See below)
Hmmmm...explains alot, but it questions the integrity of the US northern border states.
"Many northern U.S. states also have had supposedly 300-pound-plus deer reported. Actually seeing these deer weighed, though, would separate fact from fiction. "
The Maine record deer is OFFICIAL with state Reps. Dressed 355 lbs. (after 3 days of hanging)! That record has stood for nearly 50 years.
DesertRat,
Can you point me to an official site in AB that lists that deer you posted as an OFFICIAL dressed weight?? Thanks much. That is a HUGE Buck!
According to this article many deer seem to be reported in ON. as est. or a LIVE weight manner.
You guys need to come to a uniform method of weighing in deer, or you will be forever under scrutiny.

Carl, if the deer was officially weighed in, I wouldn't know about it. The fellow in the pic is a friend that I grew up with. His dad sent the photo to my dad last fall. Where it was weighed is not known. It could have been at the butcher shop for all we know. I guess there may be no official score and who knows how accurate the scale is etc... The fact is, you just look at the monster and know it is a big animal. From what I am hearing about the area that he hunts, he gets 2 or 3 big bucks every year. This one is not the biggest rack he has ever taken but the body size is the largest he has ever put an arrow into. Sorry I have no more info other than what my dad sent through to me.

Carl,
Man that is a really good question. I can not answer it. I simply have not a clue waht the most nothern limit for whitetail is. Any body out there from MNR in Ontario? If you are please answer. All I can tell you is the Ont, of the non-maritime provinces is the shortest when it come to northern latitudes. Ont is something like 57 degrees while the northern boundry of AL, SK, and MB ar formed by the 60 parrell. QC goes further north up arougnd 62nd or 63rd parrell. I have driven to southern James Bay and hunted fly-in camps way up near Ugava Bay. However, my hunting was strictly for caribou as whitetail are not that far north. The borel forest existed in Ungava but not on the tops of the hills. Rivers and lakes seem to moderate the temperture enough (perhaps being on the eastside of the Hudson Bay helped as well) to allow the trees to survive. When I was in Fort Rupert in Southern James Bay they only worked with caribou hides. No whitetail there I guess. I can not remember if there were discussions about moose there or not. I leave Sunday for SK and I will ask the outfitter how far the whitetail range extends in SK.
Sorry it doesn't help much.

My biggest deer, taken near Parry Sound, Ontario, although never weighed was pushing 275lbs. Dressed, skinned, legs of below the "knee", and headless, the butcher estimated the carcass at 200lbs. Although he had never butchered a deer before he was a very experienced butcher with many decades under his belt. He was able to completely bone, and cut into steaks, make rolled roasts, and stew cuts in just under an hour. This deer took me over a half hour to drag 75 yards from where it dropped to my canoe. I couldn't go more than twenty steps without needing to take a break.
While dragging it from the canoe to the truck(a quarter mile away) I nearly gave up and left it. It took over four hours to get him to the truck. twenty steps at a time. The only way I was able to get him into the pickup bed was to find a rock that rasied up to the level of the tailgate, otherwise I would never have got that deer into the truck.
He was one of those bucks that was the same thickness from behind his ears to his tail. I have a pic of him at imagestation if you want to see him. I've tried bringing it here but without any luck.
