Exomax scores again!

Post by Red Label »

Got another one tonight, a small racked large bodied 5 pointer. 10 yards double lung. Well after dark before we picked up a sporadic blood trail, we just found him and field dressed him, going back out now for the extraction. He's in the worst place imaginable! Thank God I have a strong 17 year old to help me out! Total distance was inside of 100 yards recovery.

The Exomax rocks baby!

More details & pics tomorrow!

Here's the story - I will take a picture at the butcher shop tomorrow...sorry but it's the best I can do under these adverse conditions.
Long story, read it if you want...

I went out EARLY to have a long sit today. I was in the woods at noon and had climbed in to a new spot at 1:30PM. I've never hunted here before but have seen hot scrapes every fall and this fall was no exception. The place is absolutely cooking with does and I see a harem here every night from the highway. I sat in about 20 yards downwind of the freshest scrape in the string and waited. After looking around a bit I realized it was really THICK and I hadn't carved any shooting lanes here (like I said, new spot). I figured I'd at least watch the nature channel and maybe brush out a spot tomorrow for a better Friday hunt.

I was dozing in my stand (yes guys, I'm tied in  ) with my crossbow sling looped over the front rail and the bow just hanging in front of me when a fawn comes out of the cover and walks 10 yards in front. I hurriedly but slowly unhooked the sling and prepared for the entourage of does and fawns but none came. The fawn was alone and played behind my stand for a bit before wandering off.

It was a full half hour later I saw the antlers coming...he was nose to the ground like a bloodhound tracking that fawn. I picked a clear spot where the fawn had gone through and readied for the shot. He took the same path, I BAHHED him, he stopped and the arrow was already through him and into a tree on the far side. He took about 10 fast trotting steps, tail tucked and then just walked really slowly out of sight. I had seen the arrow penetrate and I knew he was as good as dead. I waited for the crash and it never came. Light fading now, quick check for blood, found the arrow, no blood trail!

I go home, drop off the gear, get the lights, lantern, glow sticks and Junior and off we go. Picked up good blood about 40 yards out, only 3 big puddles and then just droplets. Just about tripped over him, he had gently laid down on a dried up pond floor in real soft earth...that's why no "crashdown".

Thanks guys, good night.
