Hunting naked?

Post by DuckHunt »

How many of you hunt without a rangefinder?

Mine is hopefully lodged near the wipers on the hood of my Jeep. I'll find out about dark. To me it's almost an essential tool. I feel almost naked without it.

Granted that it's not really necessary at preferred shot distances.

Although I'm pretty good at estimating distance, I use one all the time. In fact, I own two.

I bought a used Bushnell Yardage Pro in the late 90’s and still used it until last year, and it still works great. Earlier this year, I bought a used Swarovski rangefinder off another message board. It’s much smaller and lighter, and I like it really well.

I generally take a rangefinder to the stand, but I try to know distance markers around all my stands ahead of time.

My crossbow blind only offers a 20 yard shot so a rangefinder wouldn't be useful there. I do use one everywhere else I go. If you are going to use the range reticles on the scope you have to know exact distances.

Never caught without it by choice. :eusa-naughty: I was embarrassed on my recent hog hunt to discover I had dead batteries and had to borrow my friend's.

I use 1 to mark distances that I will be shooting. Where I hunt(private property),I never shoot further than 20 yards max. I place a pumpkin at the 20 yard mark a pour some vanilla extract on it and sit and wait. The deer pretty much cross this location everyday(evening) at almost the same time, give or take 10 minutes. If they don't cross by a specific time, then they won't be crossing period. I have learned to hunt smarter, not harder...lol

I always use one. I'll range all the trees when I get bored.

I carry one all the time and range trees etc where I sit. I also use the same one when sight in and to determine my 20, 30, 40 yd distances. Some are better than others but they can be off by +/- 1.5yards
