Messed up

Post by ko4nrbs »

Got down river this morning. Settled into tree stand for a few hours when 3 does came along. Had to wait several minutes for a good shot. Finally had a shoulder shot and double lunged one. Must of it too high no blood trail. Arrow passed through and was covered in blood. Looked all over for the deer but couldn’t find it.

Very discouraging!! Hard place to get to and sleep in boat. Lot of deer here though.

It happens to all bowhunters just part of the gig. Don't let let it get you down.

Well there is blood some where if'en the arrow passed thru the tick toter. I suggest you start at the last spot you saw here n grid search about 10' apart fer 100 yds n move over 10' n so on. That tick toter is down wid blood coverin the arrow

Same thing happened to me early this season. Never found the deer or a blood trail. Discouraging it is but keep after ‘me.

I’ve killed a bunch of deer with a crossbow and never have got very good blood trails. The one I killed a couple weeks ago didn’t bleed at all until just before it went down. I had to search a thin grove of tamaracks to find her but did find her.

If a person shoots at enough deer, sooner or later you’re going to lose one...

Over the years I now put shot placement above all else. No hard quartering shots. Double lung or heart and they are down in seconds.

Deer are tough animals and will go a long ways before dying if it's a marginal hit.
A touch of frost has heightened your awareness and your heart steadily beats in anticipation. Your senses are suddenly alert to the movement on the forest floor and you realize that the moment of truth is at hand.

Best blood trail without question comes from a heart shot but a deers heart can function for up to two minutes after being ventilated and as we all know a deer can cover a lot of ground in that amount of time. A double lung shot imo seems to yield the shortest recovery (other than a spine shot which I don’t recommend) but could require more intense tracking in thick cover.

Anyone that has shot many animals has and will lose one now and then and while unfortunate it is reality.

I've noticed on a lot of deer I've shot and trailed is to find the last blood direction and stay straight on that direction.

Saw about a dozen does this morning. Shot a big one at about 14 yards. Good blood trail led right to the deer at about 50 yards.

Never did find the one from yesterday. Looked all over.

Feel a little better now.
