That is perfect Matt! Nicely done  .....I still have the old Winchester pump shotgun given to me by my Dad's old hunting partner. He's long passed now but will always be in my heart.

Incredible story indeed! The excitement in his eyes. A day he will never forget. My hats off to you, for taking the time to teach this fine young man, what it is all about... Thank you.

The Learning Curve Continues...

The young fella is now proudly cooking up his buck for the family, and developing his own dishes / technique as he goes:

From all accounts that buck is tender & tasty!! Image

Guess I hung him long enough after all...

This tale keeps getting even better!

Yesterday River Sportsman in Campbell River held their annual Big Buck Contest.
Quite a few entries!

Long story short, our Young Gun took first in Youth, then went on to win Best Overall for 2018!!!
He kept the first place prize, a new scattergun.
The Youth prize he returned with these words:

"Young ones like me and him are our future. He should get that prize, and I insist that he does."

Sure as hell made this old heart swell with pride I'll tell you!! :D

Image

And true to his (and his Pa's nature) they didn't let even a single day go by without trying out the new toy!

Checking the fit:

Ready to shoot:

The report came back that it is a very nice shotgun, with a rather good full choke.
Super tight patterns.
50 rounds today.
Happy Happy!

Yep - Happy Happy all round!!

Cheers,
Nog

That young man amazes me and his actions speak volumes about his parents. As I've said, his dad is one of the nicest fellas you could meet...and his guide has also done an outstanding job in mentoring both father and son. This story just makes me keep smiling!!!

This young man is developing into someone I respect, and almost every time we interact I am reminded of that. Hell of a lot of that is due to the nature and attitude of his parents for sure! And to some small extent I have played a little role there too. Never had kids, he is about as close as I am going to get. Certainly is fun to be involved with such a great individual, and to help nurture him in the ways of being a Man as well as a real Sportsman!

He is finally catching on regarding just how good that buck was. All well and good when Pa & I say it is a true Big Boy. But when the head scorer comes along and says it is The Best he has seen in many years, then goes on to note that of 100 blacktail hunters with years of experience, perhaps only one would ever take one that good in their entire hunting career. Then caps it off by noting it will be going into the Record Books! Lad's eyes were huge as that was being said, and I could easily see the message sinking home.

Funny thing, on the ride home he again said we will probably find an even bigger one this fall. I joking said well if we do, I am shooting it! He laughed and said That will be fine with me. I got my Big Boy, and now it's your turn. I certainly will not be greedy when it comes to that. LOL.
Imagine...

Yep, really like that kid alright!

And already looking forward to next fall when we renew our search for another... :D

Cheers - Nog!!

Great stuff I enjoy seeing P.E.T.A in action People Eating Tasty Animals. Animals that have lived their lives free until they are harvested in a humane way witch ends their life in less than sixty seconds not the brutal way nature kills by starvation, diseases, being ripped apart, eaten alive, or exposure.
Hunt eat sleep repeat.
