Took a buck with the M380 today

Post by XB I GO »

I've been seeing some great deer on the camera, but they are showing up at weird times. The does are always there early morning and late afternoon but the big bucks have showed up at 1025AM, 240PM, 449 PM and so on. Two bucks are usually together - The Claw and Crazy Horn. The Claw is a little buck that has short tines and makes a claw looking thing on one side. I think the word is palmated? Crazy horn is a 4 year old that has always had one twisted short antler with a brow tine and one long spike on the other side. We have his sheds and pictures which is how I know he is 4 years old. The Claw had the same thing going on last year but he is only two. There are some other big ones on camera and I actually went out because of a massive 12 pointer that was on the camera yesterday morning. When I walked into the blind a doe was standing there looking at me and she just walked off. I got settled in about 425PM and in 5 minutes a button buck started feeding around even right up against the blind. His mama came out and stayed in the 20 yard clearing. At 505PM the mama threw her head up and was very intent. She then ran off hard and fast. That usually means someone or something is coming. After a few minutes The Claw stepped out. It was easy to tell it was him through the scope. I waited until the button buck walked out of view to really study The Claw. After about 5 minutes I did not see Crazy Horn or any other deer with him. Dad said we could shoot him since he is no better than last years antlers. He turned pretty good at 20 yards so I put the crosshairs on the back of his ribs and lined up the up and down crosshair line between his front legs. The Matrix just sort of went off - I didn't even think about the shot it just happened. The Claw jumped over a bush to where I couldn't see him. I could hear a lot of thrashing and I knew he was down right on the other side of the bush where he landed. I went and got the garbage bucket - that's how we take deer out of the woods in the neighborhood where we park. I got Dad. The Claw was right where I heard him and he didn't make it 15 feet from where the bolt struck him. The arrow did go in right behind the ribs. It was sticking out except the vanes between his shoulder and his neck (his head was outstretched when I shot). The bolt is in good shape but the broadhead went through the corner of the shoulder blade and bent the ferrule. While this isn't the biggest deer out here, we get 3 buck tags and 2 doe tags where I live. And we're going doe hunting on another place this weekend.

Congratulations XB! Judging by the quality of the picture, your dad taught you to respect your quarry by using a good set up for your picture! You are a good young man! I hope I'm around to see you grow up!
