Elk Size animal with 308 short ?

What are the thoughts of hunting elk size animals with 308 short ?

No problem, jus keep the yardage reasonable. Vixen was used to kill a very large Moose in Canada, not me. Think it was a lot of talk about it at one time.

We have shot elk and elk size animals with vertical bows. My Dad's was 62# with a 410 grain arrow with 228FPS. His new bow is set at 50# with a 380 grain arrow and gets 266FPS. If you look at the weight and velocity your 308 Short can do that easily. You can probably get more than 266FPS with a 425 or even 450 grain bolt. Also, you might use a 125 or 150 grain broadhead that could help with more penetration than the 100 grain broadheads used on our arrows. My brother and I don't shoot past 25 yards right now and even my Dad wont shoot past 30 yards hunting. One while caribou hunting we watched a guy shoot one at 90 yards. His bow was 75# and the velocity was still only 300 FPS. I don't remember the arrow weight but we were surprised he got it easily. Of course, he practiced at long range and had the right sights with a slide. A caribou is not as big as an elk but a lot bigger than a deer. You will be fine with your 308 Short with good broadhead, perfect shot placement and reasonable range.

If a 280 fps vixen 2 can kill a record moose your faster bow can kill an elk. I have friends that have killed numerous elk with 180 fps longbow. Shot placement and everything dies quickly.

No Problem at all...

I'll be shooting a 100 grain X-Act off of stock Firebolts out of my Vixen II this year for deer.

I have no doubts they will be stuck in the ground after going through the deer.
