Center Serving Advice
Hi again. Seems I post on here in spates. Here's a question for string makers. I've been making my own endless loop strings now for several years, and I've been happy with the result. I decided to make a new string for my Micro while I'm waiting on my replacement limbs, mostly to give myself something calm to do while I heal from an ankle sprain. Anyway, all went well until I put the center serving on, and the (*insert expletive*) serving came out 1/8" off center. Is this enough to throw things out of whack? Should I redo the serving, or is this in the realm of "negligible"? I'm no fan of sloppy work, especially when it's my own, but I'm also feeling lazy and don't want to redo it. Thoughts from the string theorists?
Re: Center Serving Advice
It seems that you are picky, and I can relate. I am like that also, to the point of being anal retentive at times. As much as one wishes for things to be perfect all of the time, one has to know where to draw the line. If it bothers you that much, that the serving 1/8" off center, then by all means redo it. Otherwise, don't stress over it. In the end, other than cosmetically, it won't make much of a difference, if at all. The choice is yours.

I agree with CB, if'en it really bothers you reserve. Off center 1/8" is not going deflect the strings ability to work. Most ppl. would not see it was off center
Re: Center Serving Advice
I would think you would be fine. If your all sighted in, you’ll know immediately if something is off. Shoot it!

Re: Center Serving Advice
I use a very fine white paint marker on strings to mark where servings begin and end, it helps to get them perfect..

Re: Center Serving Advice
Me being a first time crossbow Noob! When our string stretches and we adjust by twisting counterclockwise will the serving move off centre a little bit? If it does(again I’m a noob) could you pull that serving back to centre buy twisting the appropriate string end?
Another string question for my own information if I remove my string and flip it end for end will that prolong serving life? Would flipping the string after it stretches a bit help centre the serving?

Any twists from either end are always symmetrical.

Re: Center Serving Advice
I've done that. One of my first servings was out twice that and it didn't effect anything. Maybe over 100 yards it would

Re: Center Serving Advice
Doing any of the above isn't going to change how the serving is centered, however by flipping it 180 degrees, it might rotate the bottom of the serving to the top. Twisting the string can also achieve the same thing. Therefore either method can be used to try to reduce the wear on the serving.Stepnoutnb wrote: ↑Thu Aug 29, 2019 8:47 amMe being a first time crossbow Noob! Re: Center Serving Advice
I find that the original servings on the excal bows don't last very long so I always carry my serving tool with me. I have several times on out of town hunting trips reserved my strings and trust me it was a rush job in less than ideal circumstances and having the serving off on one side or the other has never had much of a concern for accuracy out to 60 yards for me anyway. When I get home I reserve them to get it even mostly for looks .
Re: Center Serving Advice
If you're going to reserve it, wait until it stops creeping. A perfectly centered serving on a new string can shift after it is shot. 1\8" is no big deal unless it is touching a bumper on one side but not the other.
