Down River Trip

Post by ko4nrbs »

I see a hunt downriver in my near future: Anytime between 10/27 and 11/2. Excellent Rut weather. Planning on staying out for 4 days depending on how it goes.

Decided to use my Ground Blind instead of the climbing tree stand. My wife does not like the idea of me hunting in a tree alone so far from anyone anyway. Not many trees in this area suitable for a climbing tree stand so the Ground Blind will allow me to try different spots. I like the idea of being able to adapt to changing deer movements.

Deer sign in this area really gets my heart pumping Scrapes and rubs everywhere I looked a week ago.

Now to plan my menu of cold meals. Can't cook in this spot since I am so close to the deer. I have a very warm sleeping bag and warm clothes so the low temps are not a problem. Just uncomfortable until I get dressed in the mornings.

There are excellent but difficult areas to access out there that have good deer populations. Just got to think outside of the box and be willing to rough it a little.

I put up a ground blind day before yesterday at about 11 AM and checked and reset a camera on the food plot. I noticed my batteries were at 59% so I went back today and replaced the batteries just in case. I checked the pics and was surprised to see a doe followed shortly by a 4 point buck walk across the plot about 30 yards in front of the blind within a couple of hours after I set it up. They never even looked at the blind and it is not even brushed in. I had 3 more shots of deer during daylight yesterday doing the same.

I’ll take canned chicken and jerky over spam any day! I had all the spam anyone should have in a lifetime, which for me was not much!
