BD400 questions

Post by cadmaster »

My brother just bought a used Ecal BD400 ($600 plus shipping) and he got very little with the bow. A cocking rope, 3 arrows, 2 Boltcutter broad heads (weight unknown), a field point and one arrow broke getting the bow out of the closet which makes me concerned over the safety of the used arrows as they should be much stronger than that. He is pretty much a noob when it comes to crossbows, but has a vertical bow.

I have several questions regarding bolts, broadheads and such.

1) are the premium proflights bolts worth the extra money or should he just stick to the Diablos?

2) could he use some of my 20" firebolts temporarily until he buys some bolts? is that safe even? they would be just over the 350 total weight with 100 grain field points so he could at least try out the crossbow.

3) do the diablo with luminocks shoot a different zero than a standard diablo? I imagine they do but am unsure. the weight difference between illuminated and none illuminated is 27 grains.. I just shoot plain jane firebolts. The cost difference makes having all lumniocks kind of out of the question, I would say have 3-6 illuminated for hunting and the rest non-illuminated.

I believe he is planing on using boltcutters as he already has some I assume you guys prefer the 150 Over the 100 grain weight. I shoot 100 grain broadheads and points with my axiom. any thoughts on the weights?

will shooting heavier weight arrows help prevent limb problems?

I gave him a basic list of the stuff he needs to buy so he can hunt:

arrows: 12-18 recommended

diablo 18" (illuminated or not)
illuminated per 3 $79.99 can tire
non illuminated per 6 $89.99 can tire

proflight 18" (illuminated or not)
non illuminated per 6 $99.99 bass pro
illuminated per 3 $99.99 bass pro

boltcutter broadheads 3 pack 100 grain $59.99 can tire
3 pack 150 grain $49.99 can tire
MATRIX Series String as a spare $39.99 bass pro
CROSSBOW STRINGER $36.99 can tire
Crossbow Block (for use with field points or broad heads)
Ex-Oil (trigger)
Ex-Lube$16.99 can tire or X-Slick$14.99 can tire (rail lube)
Ex-Wax (serving wax) $10.99 can tire
hunting case (soft) $59.99 bass pro
storage case soft or hard. $99.99 bass pro

optional

X-TENDER - Black (stock extender) $44.99 bass pro
Excalibur Extinguisher Arrow Puller $16.99 bass pro
Excalibur Air Brakes for Martix and Micro Crossbows $59.99 bass pro

4) Am I missing anything obvious from the list?

I know I have not given him any custom options or such. I figure he can make those decisions in the future once he learns more. just trying to give him a realistic idea of what he needs and price.

TIA

Mark

I would make a deal with Anthony, pay the shipping and buy the 4 pro-flights that he has for sale in the trading post from his A420. Get a stringing aid and call it good! Use the 150g bolt cutters and go poke some holes.

Everything else on your list can come later if ever at all.
