Morning or afternoon hunts

Post by Boo »

I like morning hunts because you don't have to track in the dark. I like afternoon hunts because I think it's too easy to bump deer in the morning darkness going in, lessening the chance of a shot opportunity. In the end, my tendency is to hunt afternoons but recently I've hunting mornings and I like spending more time in the field.

Overall, afternoon. Generally see most deer the last hour of the day. Big deer the last 15 minutes.
During Dec-Jan - fair amt of deer movement 10-2. Really big deer, last hour of the day.

One area I hunt is a morning only spot. Near zero movement in legal light . It's a 100 acre slice between food and bedding.

The other spot I have been frequenting this season show most opportunity in the evening. 30 minutes before light.

So I prefer both. My choice is mornings.

Yep, also we have a coyote problem in the northern part of the state and they have no problem getting on your deer right away.

I like afternoons only because the decision when to quit is made for you by the darkness. Although I love being in the woods when everything is waking up and coming to life, I hate when I leave the stand after a morning hunt and am wondering....should I have stayed just a little longer.

I hunt on a prive property I like to keep the deer guessing on when I come in. One week I’ll hunt a morning or two then a afternoon the following week all afternoons starting around 1pm. That said all my successful harvest have been late afternoons or near last light. So I prefer afternoons and sleepin’s

I prefer morning hunts, but in my last years hunting, I had limited hunting areas and the areas dictated how I hunted them. Not every location premitted me the chance to sneak in not detected for mornings, and some areas I couldn't access undetected for the evening.

I prefer morning hunts because that provides me plenty of time to process the deer that same day. I'm also not a fan of tracking deer in the dark. But, I certainly do hunt both times and have found them to be equally productive. I tracked down one buck after dark this season and took another buck two minutes into legal shooting time in the morning. What I prefer and what works doesn't always jive. I certainly see more deer in the last 30 minutes of light than I do in the first 30 minutes. That could be because the area I hunt is small and I bump the deer off of it when I sneak in.

While I generally see more deer on the morning hunts, I see more mature deer on the evening hunts just before last light so since I am currently in the “more selective stage” of my hunting career I have to cast my vote for the evening hunts at this time.

This time of year it is afternoon all the way. Earlier in the season I'd have to say mornings.

I picked the morning option, because where I hunt the bucks seem to show up at first light when the does are coming out of the bedding area. I can also track and find the deer and get it to the processor the same day. The one near me closes before end light, and I haven't learned to do the deer myself yet. Problem with the afternoon hunts is the does return about 30 minutes before end light. The bucks at this time are coming out slow and careful.

I like the afternoon hunts I don't mind tracking in the dark . seems like I see more deer in the last half hour of light. In the rut I prefer to set all day.
