Re: piebald deer
I’ve seen only one in all of my years of hunting!
Re: piebald deer
Here's a better picture without the sunlight glare.

This one is the only one I've ever seen while hunting. He was harvested in late season and it was the first time I had ever seen him. I've got a trail camera picture in this same area about two years later with a deer that had a couple small fist sized white spots on top of its back.

The photo above is the back side of the tree he was standing behind that was perfectly blocking a shot at the vitals. I kept wondering how I was going to harvest him without ruining the mount until he stopped. I correctly calculated that the tree would slow the bullet enough that it wouldn't pass through. I didn't account for the buckshot effect of the shrapnel, but the taxidermist made the impact invisible.

Re: piebald deer
I've never seen one myself but I would get a lifesize mount if I ever killed one. Great looking deer mount!

Re: piebald deer
I have seen one. >20 years ago. On the same land, the land owner/farmer has seen a totally white doe. I never saw it. I’ve hunted the same land for 38 years.

Re: piebald deer
there are quite a few in my area and this time of year can be seen in small herds there maybe a few in the group. that said ive never seen one hunting and theyd probly get the pass from me. they tend to hang around the feeders behind the houses.
Re: piebald deer
I have seen 1, a doe I let her walk in hopes she would give birth to babies and have more. That was the 1st and only time I ever seen her or any others.
Awesome mount!! If I would ever shoot one I’d want to do a full body mount also.

Funny how they have shorter legs than other deer.

Re: piebald deer
I saw one this year while driving to one hunting spot. But funnt this came up..........
I work with a group that bow hunts and donates venison, so we work with the wildlife biologist quite a bit. Landowners contact him to get in a program that allows them to provide tags for people like me so we get onto properties we might not otherwise. On one property we hunt, the landowner took the biologists advice and had us specifically target the piebald deer on the property (we didn't get one though). The biologist says they generally have genetic defects that can be passed along so they should be removed from the herd to protect the health of the herd. Meat is fine though. But on another property we were strictly forbidden to shoot them because "they are pretty".
Doesn't matter to me one way or another.

Re: piebald deer
It seems like once the piebald gets in the gene pool it just kinda stays.
There are many parks and non hunting areas where you see them multiply freely.
Its just the simple thing that they stand out like a sore thumb and get wacked .....rather quickly in a well hunted area. .
Your most likely to see one on private property for sure.
