seeking knowledgable muzzleloading input.
i know this isn't a crossbow question but figured this is the best hunting forum online,i was hoping someone may have a few ideas.......? i just recently purchased a ruger model 77/50 ss ml. 22" barrel with a 1:28 twist and wondering on what load would provide the best performance.
It's a trial and error kind of thing.
I shoot a Omega in-line 50 cal. with a 1/28 barrel. What works for me to achieve 3" groups at 100yrds. has been:
348 Grain, Hollow Point, Copper jacketed powerbelts with 120 Grain of triple 7 powder. I realy like the powerbelts for their ease of loading.
This year I have switched to Hornady 50 cal sabot with 45 Cal 250 Grain balistic tip, jacketed bullets. And was able to drop down to 100 Grain of 777 and now shoot out to 150 yrds 4" group.
Next year I will go back to the powerbelts as the Sabots are real tuff to load. The triple 7 is cleaner burning than pyrodex and I feel burns a little hotter.
Good Luck

I would have to agree that the powerbelts are quite a hassle free and accurate bullet for my Traditions pursuit pro. I use the 245grain powerbelts with 100grains of triple 7, I am getting a 3 inch group or less at 100 yards. I haven't shot it any further so I don't know what the groups would be like past this. My buddy just bought a T/C encore .50 cal and he was shooting Sabots (I can't remember the brand) and he was all over the place and I couldn't beleive how hard it was starting the sabot down the barrel. (even with bore butter and a starter). Just my oppinion

Camper, I'd like to share my experience with triple seven with you. Please note that I'm not trying to be a smartalleck nor discredit you but please read on to learn what I did about triple seven. After alot of problems with an overpriced muzzle loader. I gave up and bought a CVA optima pro. I tried 100grains of triple seven and the powerbelt bullets but couldn't get a good group. I called the manufacturer and told them of my delima. Now, I'm the first to admit that I am very much a Hornady fan, and CVA told me to try the new SST lock and load sabbott and up to 150 grns. of pyrodex or triple seven. When I asked how much less of the triple seven to use, He said that 150 grns of pyrodex was equal to 150 grns of triple seven in the pellet form. Now I know that this is going to stirr up a hornets nest but this is what I was told. Can't be, I thought
So I contacted Hogden and was told the same thing. A 50 pyrodex pellet and a 50grn triple seven pellet provided the same ballistics. He told me to put one of each on a flat surface and i would notice that the tripple 7 pellet is a little smaller. He was right. I shoot two 50grn and one 30grn pellet and get a 3" group at 150 yds. I do know that muzzle loders are finicky and make you want to trash it like the guy on TV. BUCKeyeHunter, keep playing with different loads until you find one that your gun shoot to your satisfaction. I just got off the phone with hogden and got the same answer again. All 50gr. pellets, pyrodex or triple seven are made to duplicate 50grns of black powder. The same goes for 30grn pellets. This of course does not apply to loose powder. Hope this helps. Once again Camper, I'm just sharing what I learned.
God Bless !!!!!!!!!

As stated in other posts the muzzle loader is real particular as to the load it will shoot best ,I shoot a T/C encore and it is very accurate with 100 gr. pyrodex ( 2- 50 gr.pellets) with a 240 gr. hornady in a sabot.(1" to 1 !/2" groups at 100 yds.) Bob

ok
now as to why i asked this question to begin with.this past weekend i was loading up with 100gr. T7 ffg powder and a 302gr hp buffalo bullet sabot.i couldnt really get it sighted in because i kept having to spend so much time between shots cleaning the excess residue out of the barrel so i could reload.
from what i've read about T7 it's supposed to be easy to clean up,i just never imagined there was so much of it.
maybe 100gr. is too much......?
i'm thinking trying real BP with a swab patch then a 375-425gr. lubed conical.as from reading the manual,it sounds like it was built with heavy conicals in mind.

I also use a ruger 77/50. excellent light weight rifle. 100 grains of pryrodex and 240 saboted bullet works well and doesn't kick. Lots of power, got a nice doe with it 2 weeks ago.will try to post pic

I would recommend this web site www.graybeardoutdoors.com and go to the forum list. They have some very knowledgable people in their forums. Can help with just about any outdoor activity.

My apologies for giving out the wrong information. I was told the info by the local gunsmith and by the Traditions company they sent me an email
Hi Darryl.
The Pursuit is pressure-tested byt he European Proofing House in Spain. It has to follow certain specific guidelines in order for us to advertise it being fully acceptable of handling 150 grains of Pyrodex powder. Because Triple 7 is concentrated we do maintain that you reduce the charge by 15%.
I read the email wrong as they did not state pellets just powder.
Again, I am sorry for the wrong information and thank you for the correction!
