Pattern Master Turkey ATTN Wayne

Post by janesy »

Patterned the pattern master a couple nights ago in a 12bore Rem 11/87 21" barrel iron sights.

I picked this choke because the price was right for a choke I would never spend that kind of money on. Oddly enough, it gave me exactly what I want, which turned out to be the exact opposite of what it advertised. Back story. I have always used an old Remchoke Ventilator which has served me well. But as my hunting style evolved it shot SO TIGHT I missed 2 birds are distances I'm embarrassed to admit. So I was looking to strengthen my short game. I've never taken a bird past 31 yards, so I see zero use for anything past 40. I wanted something that was good for 30 and bigger than a golf ball at 20.

This patternmaster gives me an acceptable pattern at 40, perfect at 30(complete decap below the brain) and devestating at 20, at about 6" across. No pic of that 20y target but imagine a paper turkey with no head. I don't expect anyone to be wowed(I'm not)with these results, but then again, I was trying to achieve a specific goal.

40 yards had 21 hits to the Killzone and 30y had 41. Note, it was extremely windy, all shots were drifting left, but I wasn't about to adjust for that at the time.
Notable to mention, the patternmaster shot 12" higher than all other chokes with the same loads.

Im interested to hear how yours works out Wayne.

Our range just opened up again. New Brunswick also has allowed 2 families (households)to visit each other. We finally were able to hug and kiss our granddaughters Sunday. We had a great picnic on the lawn. I brought the girls in the house for a treat, the 4 year old asked me if we had GERMS in the house and was it safe to go in?
I might get out this week to test fire.
I'l be using my Win SX3 with a 26 inch barrel no sights.

You really need to move your sights over to the right an inch or so.

Looks good.

When I started to Turkey hunt years ago I installed a shotgun scope. I would miss every time if I didn't use a scope!!!

Now I have a red dot and it's the bomb. Red dot on head pull the trigger and fire up the grill!!! Lol

Now I need to find time to hunt and find a cooperative bird! Ya good luck with that!!!!!!! :)

Crazy cross wind. Shot square the day before, wasn't about to play with it in the wind.

It's kind of crazy how obsessed people are with these choke tubes at sub 30 yards a modified choke with 3 inch #5s or 6 will decimate a Turkeys head it's kinda funny. .
Now with a .410 l can see it being more important but not with a 12 guage.

I agree. For years my Ventilator setup would literally decap them at 20. But if if wasn't a full decap I would get a flopping bird. After a few pattern sessions over the years and missing two birds in the last two seasons I figured out that the floppers were results of the "lucky pellet" and I fact I was probably missing the vital area with the great majority of the shot since it was the size of a golf ball.

Years ago before the choke tubes came out l had a Remington 1100 sent out to mark bansner ,a gunsmith in Adamstown pa.
He used to cut down the barrel and install a big long extra full choke sleeve it was about a foot long really was awsome because it was a gradual force feed being so long didn't distort the shot.
It made awesome patterns l actually found it more useful for buckshot at 30 yards you could put 9 oo pellets in a ten inch circle no lie.
I found it actually too tight for Turkeys at my normal 20 yard distances.
Most shots at that spot were like 10 yards l used to kill them with my cut my cut down old Steven's 911 double barrel ...it was cut down to ic choke for rabbits and woodcock but l killed a ton of turkeys with that old gun.3 inch 12 guage with #5 shot dropped them dead.shot a few at 25 yards also no problems
