What's your stand height

Post by longbow joe »

It's very thick and jungley in southeast pa. High humidity lots of viney plants l rarely exceed 12 feet anymore my ladder stands are 15 feet .
I rely on my camo and scent free or almost scent free clothing. Face mask also.
I have this one stand is probably only 10 feet .l can have deer all around me and l rarely get seen or scented it's just one of them stands that works. I like brushing in my ladders that definitely helps.
Please list any stand tips and your favorite height.
I always wear a safety belt in my climber and with a tree step setup but rarely wear one in a ladder l work on big heavy equipment and cranes etc. Almost every day twice that height l just dont feel the need in the ladder.
Most of my ladders have a bar or a branch on one side also.

Ladder stands 15’ when I climb I usually go to about 25’ from the rail on the seat section. Playing the wind, hopefully winning the game, I look to get in a cluster of trees where I have cover below me. This changed the game a bit allowing me to move without getting busted.

My main hang on stand is about 24' to the shooting rail in an oak that's trunk splits three ways at about 20'. I have two tree trunks behind me for cover that I can see between and one to the front left to hang things on and use as a shooting rest occasionally. Unless I move or make noise, deer pretty much have no clue I'm around.

But I also have a 15' ladder and a 12' ladder. My biggest buck from last season was killed on a hang-on hanging at about 8'. No matter what height I hunt at, there will be a deer uphill from me that will be at eye level at some point. Playing the swirling wind in these mountains is a fruitless endeavor. I've watched my Thermacell smoke blow four different directions in the same half hour.

I'm about the same with safety lines. I use them on my high stand or climber from the ground up, but not on short ladders. This season I have added a safety tether to the 15' ladder stand so we can connect once we're in the seat.

Take some cotton balls with you next time you hunt that stand and pull off small pieces and release them into the wind and watch where they go and I bet you will figure out why you are getting busted. Thermals go where they please and carry your scent with them.

My absolute favorite stand is a 16' to the shooting rail tripod stand. It's located where it blends in with the surroundings, about 20 feet into the woods from a crop field corner. I fold a 10' X 12' camo tarp into a 5' X 12 tarp and add more grommets, then zip tie it to the 360 degree shooting rail. Before adding the tarp I put the thickest pipe insulation I can find on the shooting rail. The shooting rail also keeps me safe and the swivel seat allows me to easily shoot in any direction. I'll be sitting there Tuesday morning with an insulated mug of coffee while watching the countryside wake up.

Me and my Ol' Man climber usually go 15 to 20 feet into a pocket of trees and then wrap my stand with some camo netting.

I mainly hunt from elevated ladder stands. They range from 15' to 18' depending on what property I'm on that day. I don't use a safety harness on a ladder stand with rails. FYI...I spent a lot of time rappelling out of those contraptions that we call helicopters. Needless to say, heights do not bother me!!
I will say this...IF... I was working out of one of those little climbers, the one's where the seat ain't as big as my feet... I'd absolutely have a safety harness on!! Why? Because "Murphy" will kick your butt when least expected!!! :eusa-doh:

All my stand locations have two things in common. They are looking down into creek bottoms, and the setting sun is at my back. Just seems to work for me.

The stands all have some type of camo cover around them, whether it's natural or man-made.
I usually "pull" them in late January about every other year for general maintenance, (re-painting the camo, re-tightening all the bolts, and replacing whatever needs attention in order to assure safety). This also gives me a chance to replace the straps that hold the ladder to the tree.

All this works for me. But' I'm just one out of several million guys and gals that hunt. I don't place my feeders in front of my stands. I find travel corridors and usually place my feeders where these meet open areas. I then hang stands where the deer will be travelling to and from bedding areas to the feeding stations. I do make mock scrapes and rubs around my stands. And I also hang or make a good, highly inviting, "licking branch" or "Licking Stick", as Anthony would say!!!
All joking aside...THEY WORK!!!

Scent control is a major factor. During the off season, I pack my hunting gear in red cedar shaving I get from a sawmill. I pull them from the bag about 7-10 days before season starts. Air them out a bit, and then go hunt.
Now if you live where Cedar trees don't grow, I wouldn't recommend this treatment. The deer would NOT be fooled!! :eusa-doh:
But here in East Texas, It works. It also keeps the bugs away!! That's a plus!!! :D

My wife calls me compulsive....I prefer the term "Thorough"!!!!! :wtf: :eusa-doh: :?

My lock on stands are 20-25 ft and most of my ladder stands 15 ft. I' still hunt mostly from lock ons with climbing sticks and Life lines. I still enjoy climbing high but I make sure I get hooked into my safety lines before climbing. This Saturday is opening day for archery so hopefully I'll get a chance to put a nice doe down. Good luck to ya'll and stay safe.

Had a large limb come down on my stand and smash it. wasn't worth repairing so i moved over a few yards and found 3 trees 8-10" apart. screwed some 2x6's in as high as i could reach off my ladder on very uneven ground- about 10'. it's on a ridge so it'll be fine looking downhill but will be like a ground blind to the deer behind me.
