My luck is continuing
Last year was the first time since I started crossbow hunting that I didn't get a deer with my bow. Several times I had bucks in range but, either they didn't have the 4 pts. on one side required, or I couldn't be sure. No doe ever came within range. I shot a buck and a doe with my rifle, so we had plenty of venison, but I would have rather shot one with my crossbow.
This year has been different. Opening morning (Sept. 15) a 7 point buck committed suicide 15 yards in front of my stand. He had a small rack but was a nice sized fat deer. I had not hunted since then until last evening when I hunted for an hour and a half and saw no deer.
This morning it was 36F. and calm. A little after 7 deer started appearing all over. I can't shoot another buck until rifle season so of course, a big buck stood broadside at about 40 yards. I saw 13 deer altogether and a big doe finally wandered into range and I put an X-Act through her. She ran about 50 yards and went down.
Riflemanz has kindly offered to post my pictures and I will send him pictures of both deer.

Re: My luck is continuing
Congrats.
In pa were l live we can basically buy unlimited doe tags but only one buck.
I've learned to be really patient and many times end up shooting a much smaller buck during winter bow than the ones I passed up during regular archery season.
I'm out there to get what l feel is a trophy buck for my area.
Sometimes l have to field judge a buck in seconds notice...and that's kinda hard even for me.
It's hard during the rut when everything is moving fast.
If the right one comes you will know and you won't think about it.
It just kills me to be out there without a buck tag.

Re: My luck is continuing
I'm not much of a trophy hunter but I'd rather shoot a buck than a doe. We do seem to have several very nice bucks running around this year. My next chance to shoot a buck is firearms season or after it with my crossbow. The first legal buck I see within range is in trouble. I can resist anything except temptation1longbow joe wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2020 10:18 pmCongrats.
