Decock or shoot after hunt

Post by Ankh »

Any advantage to decocking over firing into a discharge bag? Thanks

The advantage is you don't have to fire into anything. Just put the arrow back into your quiver then de-cock. Simple as that.

Less wear and tear on your string serving when you decock vs shooting not to mention the safety factor of not shooting a projectile.

Not sure of your question.

If you finish hunting, likely you won't have a "discharge bag" anywhere handy. If you are target shooting, it's pretty much the same.

Some people carry an old arrow that they can fire into the ground when they're done hunting. Not much sense in shooting a good broadhead into rocks covered with dirt, you know.

Even so, decocking makes a whole lot more sense than carrying a "beater" arrow just so you can be able to shoot an arrow into the dirt.

Don't be "that guy" who discharges his arrow into the HARD ground only to loose an eye when the arrow fractures , bounces back taking out an eye.

IT HAS HAPPENED :wtf:

I suggest de cocking or using a proper discharge target to prevent personal injury of the worst kind.

I decock my 380 every time using the cocking rope, my buddy has a compound and has to shoot his every time.
At first he just shot it into the ground or looked for a rotten stump, then he got a little discharge bag that he now shoots at when we get back to the truck.
My line of thought is the same as Bcxbow, less wear and tear by using the rope to decock it.

Decock after every hunt. Matrix 380 with the rope, Micro with the Charger.

I’ve got a target set up at my house, and I shoot my bow after every hunt (usually multiple times).

...I am not trying to be presumptuous but it sounds like the OP has some sought of hesitance with the decocking procedure over firing at the end of the day....as LBJ said....do it a few times and it WILL BE easy peasy!

.....BTW as an aside....I remember a cold winter day in the Winter Bow season of January 2014 I had cocked my Gen1 335 and ventured off to an unproductive afternoon.....all the time I was sitting I was fearful of what was ahead of me; the decocking of the 335.....my have times changed....again, do it a few times and you will be a pro.

Should have added specifics. I hunt my own land and walk to my spots from my cabin. I have a target in the yard and leave a field point arrow in it. I guess my question is is it bad to fire the bow, or does decocking extend the life of said bow?

Decock cause you gotta have your rope hooked up for the next time you hunt anyway. And because it's stupidly easy and safe to do.
