Son's First Solo Buck
My 15 year old son Lukas had sweet success on Thursday evening while hunting what we've coined the "Number 1" stand. He had shot a buck previously as an apprentice hunter with me in the blind with him, but this is the first one he's shot while hunting solo and he was super excited! And it was quite the experience!
The afternoon sit began with us getting to our stand at approx 3PM - and after settling in he texted me asking if he should do a rattle/call sequence. We'd talked about how to do this, and did a brief practice in the garage prior to heading out. So he did his sequence and so began the afternoon hunt. He did another bit of calling as the afternoon wore on, and then at 6PM he text and asked if he should do one more rattle/call - to get ready for 'magic hour' (last hour of daylight). I suggested holding off on the rattling, but go ahead and do another grunt sequence. I swear I just hit 'send' on this response and I got a text back from him "Huge fricken buck!". As soon as he laid out a couple of grunts, this eight pointer immediately came trotting through the bush to investigate who was in his woods! As the buck approached the shooting lane, Lukas let out a 'bah' to stop him...but the timing was a little off and by the time the buck stopped (after two more steps), his vitals were behind a tree - no opportunity for a good shot!
The buck began walking again and was working his way through the bush - heading away. My son could see him through the bush, and as he was leaving my son let out two more little grunts - and that piqued the bucks interest - and he turned back around! As he approached the shooting lane again, Lukas timed his 'bah' better, had him stop broadside at 25 yards and whistled one of Boo's magic quills carrying a 150gr SlickTrick through him using his Mag 340 Micro.
The buck bolted but only went 25 yards and crashed down. I told him to remain in the stand, and I'll work my way over before we start looking for him. As I worked over to him, I kept getting texts from him saying how he couldn't stop shaking! Gotta love the adrenaline rush - that's what it's all about!
SO SO proud of this accomplishment. Hopefully it's a first of many with us hunting together......
We even made sure he got his hands dirty and learned how to field dress his buck!

Congratulations to all! I really enjoyed reading your story and seeing the pictures. There doesn't seem to be as many people posting hunt stories this year so thanks for posting this. Maybe everybody is hunting.

A young mans first buck on his own is a special day indeed.

Great story! Sometimes a grunt will work, and sometimes it won't. But you'll never know unless you try. Great job on a nice buck.
