92 or 110

Post by OhioXBowhunter »

I’m in the process of cutting down some BEZs and BEEs down to 16.5 for our Axe and 400TD bows with the 16.5 arrow which would be the better insert the 92 grain or 110 grain inserts. All my broadheads that we shoot are 125 grains. I have plenty of both inserts just looking for some advise if the 110 grain with a 125 BH would be too much weight up front.

110 grain inserts and any weight head you want to use.

Same here. I use the same arrows in my 340TD and 400TD with 110gr inserts and 100gr heads. They fly well with just about any head out there.

With 125gr heads, you should be able to get by just fine with 92gr inserts. In either case, those things are going to hit hard.

If you don't mind me asking, how many grains are the inserts for the factory 16.5" quills?

I remember mine being somewhere right around 60gr.

The Micro's love the 110gr Brass inserts!! It greatly improves FOC and thus improving longer range accuracy (40 plus yards, in MHO) I shoot Black Eagle Executioners spine indexed at .001. Blazer 2" vanes, Lumenoks and at least a 100 grain mechanical broadhead. You might try 125's also. See what your rig likes!!

As the FOC increases it becomes a case of the broadhead "pulling" the arrow thru the target and NOT the arrow shaft "pushing" the broadhead thru the target. Energy is a wonderful thing!!

Using a 125 gr broadhead, the 92 will be a great combination of speed, FOC, accuracy at just short of 400 grains. I'd don't think it would be a mistake to use a 110 grain insert. High FOC accentuates penetration, to a small degree it reduces the effects of wind and helps counteract the steering effect of fixed. Hi FOC is beneficial for fixed broadheads and the wider the broadhead, the more FOC desired. It is good to add total weight if you are using big mechanicals.
The 92 grain insert with a 125 gr moderately sized broadhead will not waste speed or accuracy. But really, it won't hurt to go 110 gr.
Me? I'd use a 92 gr with a 125 gr broadhead. You can always add weight to the back end of the front insert but you removing it isn't necessarily practical or fun. Add a Lumenock and you have more than you need for the biggest of whitetails at a ballpark 425 gr.

I sort of like fixed blades. I shot Muzzy broadheads for decades, but switch to Slick Trick Viper Tricks with brass inserts for my compound bow a few years ago. The Viper Tricks fly extremely well for my compound bow.

I was thinking of trying the 150 grain Slick Trick XBow broadheads. If the factory inserts are only 60 grains, the 150 grains may help some.

The bigger issue is that I have to buy a crossbow first! I have an Excalibur dealer sitting with my free replacement cables/strings for my G5 Prime Impact compound bow. He's going to contact me when he has some Excalibur crossbows in stock.

I sort of noticed a few Excalibur models have dropped out of the line up recently. The Bulldog 330 for example is now gone! Fewer models without the take down option exist now, too! I'm not really interested in paying extra for that feature, but I can see where some may like that.

Appreciate what you guys share. Thanks!

The big issue is that I am a bit uncertain about what I want exactly? It would be nice to be able to "kick the tires" some before purchasing one.

I was hoping to compare the Bulldog 330 to the Mag 340 side-by-side. They weren't that different in price, & I doubt the two shoot all that differently. Comparing how they feel, rope cock/decock, and other stuff would have been nice to compare.

Sorry, I don't mean to hijack this thread/topic.

To be honest, assuming you're a bit picky, you won't know what you really like until you've lived with it for a while. I suggest you buy a middle of the road bowl like the Mag 340 and from that you'll know if you want faster or slower. Then you can buy a second bow! Your other option is buy the GRZ, it will kill any deer that walked the earth. You honestly do not need more power but you might want more. :eusa-dance:

Get a Matrix, or Micro from the Trading Post. I think you'll be very happy.

I use 92s and 150 BHs in my 340. The 110s did not shoot much different at close range.

Thanks for the response I wasn’t sure if 110 grains insert with a 125 BH would be too much weight up front on a 16.5 arrow. I’ll give it a try and see how they fly. All my 18s are set up with 92 grains and they shoot great.
Thanks again
