Inserts/ Field Points

Post by Hawkeyemd »

Hello and Happy Easter to All ! Question, What's the best way to remove inserts and field points that pulled out of arrows in 18/1 target ? Lost two in target recently. Tried to push thru with a longer arrow to no avail ! Thanks, Hawkeye

I only shoot Broadheads into that target! You will never get the inserts out intentionally. Get a bag type for field points, the heat generated with them in those dense targets is "No Bueno"

So far I'm batting 100 but I haven't had an insert come out for years. I locate them with welding wire to know where and how deep and then use some long Snapon needle nose

Probably no hope getting them out. Expect you will fracture the next carbon arrow that hits the imbedded insert too, so inspect and be cautious.

Think about building your next arrows using the BEST adhesive that is fresh. Knurling your brass inserts is an easy often overlooked option.
Clean is clean. I suggest cleaning the inner shafts and inserts twice with acetone , wear gloves for this.

Lastly, a cold 18/1 will claim more inserts and tips than a warm one in the summer, unless your prepped them correctly yourself as noted above.

Good luck trying a couple of years ago I lost two arrows in mine I tried everything I could to get those arrows out and had no luck. I contacted Rhinehart and they sent me a new target and had me send the other one back so they could do some testing with it when they sent me the new one I sent them the other one back. The guy I spoke with told me they were seeing more of this problem due to the higher FPS bows with all the heat generated from the arrows. Once I got the new target I started using it for compound bows. Never had any problems with compound bows. I Never tried to use broadheads on it from the crossbows didn’t want to lose any more arrows and broadheads too.
For field tips I use the Morrell target and for broadheads I use a Block 6x6 so far no problems with either one. There are some other good ones out there that don’t eat arrows.

One of the downsides to the 18/1 is that if you lose a head on the middle. It's pretty much in the way of every angle on the entire target.
If this is the case, then the target is no good now. If the target is no good, you have nothing to lose really. Locate the heads with wire as Don suggested, and from the area closest to the surface, cut into it with a hacksaw or an ultra sharp Olfa if you can keep it clean and straight. Remove the heads. Then hold the crack open and fill it entirely with low expansion foam of good quality (not "great stuff"), look for Sika Boom or something like that that cures more solid. And immediately strap the target back together with a ratchet straps and leave it inside warm for a few days.
Should get you back in business

If you have any helical, make sure the bolt rotates right. Otherwise, the point unscrews from the insert as it penetrates into the target.

Rag target for firld points, Rhinehart for broadheads. You don't have the same problem with a broadhead as the blades cut and keep the "wound channel" from grabbing onto the field point.
