This is over the top...

Post by XB I GO »

We have a neighbor that is a tech junkie. He doesn't have much hunting experience and doesn't care for guns so we turned him on to crossbows last year. He has two kids that are I think 8 and 11 years old. Last year they would either shoot one time and get a deer or miss. Like usual, the deer would then leave. Well this man bought 11 acres nearby and has a lot of deer. He recorded his crossbow firing onto a MP3 device. He has the shooting sound looped and has the device with a speaker out right near his feeder. Basically the deer hear the "thunk" of a crossbow firing about 5 times a minute. Today we went to look. It seems to work. The feeder goes off and the deer come in. They basically ignore the "thunk" recording. Actually it's kind of annoying. Anyhow, I don't know if this will do anything when an actual arrow is launched, but this guy thinks he can shoot a deer and the rest will just stand there and ignore the shot, giving the other kid time to shoot their crossbow. Season starts next week. We'll see if this works.....

One of the spots I hunt is very close to the busiest gun club on Ontario. Deer don't seem to worry about gunshots around there

Deer get acclimated to various sounds etc.

Vehicles on roads, trains etc. one i noticed this yr. Lots of acorns dropping. Several dinking off the metal of the tree stand. Surprisingly, the deer didn't spook off.

But rub cloth or the camo fabric, heads jerk up and leg stomps.

In AZ. One would think the wingding sounds a trail bike coming off a ridge, basically withing 30 yrds of a deer i was watch. Deer didn't even care.

Same with the feeder sounds going off. Guy made/ used a recording so deer would thk feeder turned on .

This over the top....but I'm interested to see what happens. Like you said, the whoosh of the arrow and the splat of the hit might change things

Used sparingly, likely successful.

Deer don't care about many human sights & sounds & activity, until you stop! THEN you get their attention. If you go about your business paying them no mind, they don't seem to mind.

Looking forward to follow-up report on success of the crossbow MP3 looped sound. Very pavlovian.

Seems like a good idea but the one that gets the arrow isn't going to just stand around. It will take off with the others in tow.

Every time I have shot a deer with my crossbow when there were several there they run off and then if I sit quietly not moving they filter back in after 5 to 10 minutes or so. I think they are curious to see what spooked them.

That's a good point. One of the farms I hunt has frequent ATV traffic. But the atvs never stop, so we always leave them running if we are in the bush or the field with the machines during season.
Same for another farm. Frequent pickup truck traffic, so same deal.

They are used to vehicles, but not vehicles that stop and then make human noises

We had our stands all setup a couple years back, hunting along the river. We were setup in early September, and returned 5 weeks later to hunt, they had started a construction project on the bridge in between that gap. I got a nice doe that morning, they adapt very well!

A few years back there were three of us shooting at the range at a local rod and gun club when one of the guys said look up on the bank, on the top of the side bank were 3 deer feeding. There are people shooting there all the time, they get used to it, and it's not the only time that deer were spotted there while guys are shooting.
