Thermacell
I had to replace my Thermacell the other day. Can't live without them down here. I'm find out that I have to replace the mat after only two hours of burn time for some reason. Just wondering if anybody has had a like experience?

Re: Thermacell
My experience (both here in NC and in Canada in June for bears, is that it works long after it loses it's color. Are you saying bugs are hitting you with it on and after only 2 hrs? Or you just see the color change and not as much "smoke"

Re: Thermacell
.....I also have had no issues with my thermacell.....there are also chinese mats which I have (but have not tested) that supposedly work, just as well.
.....Also, I have removed the pin that does not allow you to refill the canister....so I now refill them myself.

Yeah, Dan. I had my clothes treated by Insect Shield and did not have to use my THermacell this year.

Re: Thermacell
yeah the mats turn white after two hours. Turned white after 4 hours in the old unit. I' ll leave them in longer next time to see what happens. I'm starting to refill the butane cartridges myself. It makes it a lot cheaper. I can't go in the woods without a Thermacell.

Get a quart bottle of Permethrin and do your clothes yourself. I have been doing my own for a lot of years now and still have over a half quart left. I figure it runs me around $0.25 to make a quart of mix to spray my clothes with and I also use it for bugs around the house.nchunterkw wrote: ↑Wed Nov 03, 2021 10:18 amYeah, Dan. Re: Thermacell
Look that up. I did and you are not supposed to use that kind of permethrin on your clothes or skin. The treatment I had done is washed in....which will be better coverage than any spray and will last for 70 washings...which equals several years.robertyb wrote: ↑Thu Nov 04, 2021 6:40 amGet a quart bottle of Permethrin and do your clothes yourself. Re: Thermacell
Bought and used permethrin for many years. It is recommended to be applied to outer portion of clothing and allowed to dry before use. Garments can be washed several times before requiring another application. Do not use directly on skin or allow pets to contact permethrin in any way! That’s why I quit using it and went to Elimitic clothes and never looked back. I stopped using my Thermacell after realizing how well the Elimitic works, you probably don’t really want to breathing that chit coming out of the Thermacell. JMHO I never liked Budweiser either!

Re: Thermacell
Dan,
How did you use the Budweiser? Did you spray it on the surface, or wash it into the fabric?

Re: Thermacell
Dan...I don't think we are talking about the same this.
But I know how everyone likes to argue on here.
Buying Sawyers or something is fine. BUt Robert mentioned buying a quart and mixing it himself. That brought something like this to mind....

Yep, there may be different warnings these days as well. Been a while since I used it. I don’t intend to argue one way or the other, or promote what I do use, just my opinion.

Re: Thermacell
From what I found, the difference in Permetherin SFR (36%) and Permetherin (10%) (like Sawyers) is NOT just the concentration. Even when you dilute it properly, the SFR usually contains other chemicals that are not OK to be on or near your skin. Sawyers (and others that say they are safe for clothing) are just that. Safe to use on your clothes because they do not have the other chemicals and have been properly tested.

Re: Thermacell
I have been using it since the 1980s with no harm at all. I picked up using it from the US Military who use it at concentrations much higher than I use. I do got heavier than the recommended .005 though.
Spend those big bucks. It will last for about 6 to 10 washings IF you are lucky. I have had the treated clothes and had to start spraying them down to keep ticks off also after several washes.
It will NOT hurt you in the least if you don't bathe in it or drink it. You spray down the clothes and let them dry.
I do use the 36.8% permethrin mixed properly.
