Matrix 380 and Dad got it done!

Post by XB I GO »

My Dad has been recovering from some serious surgery. He was bummed that he couldn't hunt the beginning of the season because he can't shoot a rifle, draw a bow or cock the crossbow. A forum brother sent me a power crank to borrow and my Dad got out there a few times using it. Each time, he passed on animals to let my brother or I shoot. I got a small buck with my bow and my brother shot a bear. Dad has been watching the deer patiently, waiting for a certain one. This past weekend, he could finally cock the crossbow by himself so I sent the power crank back. Dad had patterned this buck for a month. He set up an ambush and it worked. The buck, an 11-point, came in at 20-yards. Dad had my Mag 340, Quills with luminock and Sonic Bolt broadhead. He said he aimed in the triangle vital zone but somehow hit a little forward of that, right in the middle of the shoulder. The bolt buried up to the lighted nock. The buck stood there for about 10-minutes and then walked away. Dad waited 30-minutes and snuck out and went home. We were all out so he went back about 3-hours later and followed a blood trail. When it got weak, he came back home again. In the morning at his office one of his new employees and a neighbor down the street asked if he needed anything. Dad said sarcastically, "yeah a deer dog". The neighbor says, "I have one". So off they go with the deer dog. The dog picked up the trail and gained another 75-yards but it disappeared. Dad spent Wednesday night walking around looking for an orange light in the woods from the luminock. He walked over 3 miles all over on Thursday morning. What he did see was a buck almost a twin to the one he was looking for. He seemed kind of bummed out and I thought he would quit. I was surprised when he came home and asked to use my brothers Matrix 380 for the afternoon. That bow has been 100% for us all these years on a variety of animals and situations. Everything was recovered pretty quickly. That one uses BEZS, 110 grain insert, luminocks. I was surprised that Dad took off the Sonic Bolts and put on the 150 grain InnerLocs! He said, "first of all you got to leave the past and get back in the drivers seat". As far as switching broadheads he said, "I want a lot of blood and smell now that I know there is a deer dog on stand-by right down the block.

Dad says he went in the ground blind (which is a little 3 sided wooden lean-to just tall enough to sit in) at 3:30. 5 minutes later there was a doe and he got a good feeling about it. That doe left and at 4:45 7 does showed up and stayed for a half-hour, all within 20-yards. They walked off without being disturbed. Dad saw a small tree moving in the far right corner of the view and heard the buck rubbing its antlers. He got ready. The buck he saw twice earlier stepped out but instead of going into the shooting lane it came right up to the blind. Facing head-on at less than 10 feet Dad decided he could make this happen. If the deer went right or left two or three steps it would be out of view. If it walked down the lane there would be just a butt, and if it didn't stop or turn it would be gone. Dad said he put the crosshairs on the white patch and let the bolt go. The buck actually flipped over then got up and moved out of sight. Dad said the luminock was lit and in the deer. He waited a little while and got out of the blind to see. He couldn't see the deer but could see the orange light from the nock. He aimed at the nock and realized it lit up just enough of the deer to make a leg through the scope. He sent another bolt through the shoulder and it passed-through. The deer ran and Dad went straight to the bolt and picked it up. He backed out and came around to an opening to see if he could see the deer. It was staggering in the opening. Now this is a tight property with a public park on one side and a lot of populated stuff around it. Dad wasn't messing around this time. He loaded the bolt that had passed through, folded the blades and sent it through the deer again. The buck ran into the woods. Dad called the neighbor and asked "can you bring the dog right now"? Again, Dad was not messing around. The dog was there in 5 minutes and he put his nose up and starting going crazy right out of the truck. The owner let the dog track while dragging a really long orange flat lead. The dog found the deer about 20 yards where Dad saw it go into the woods. It was dead by then. Dad said this is his biggest crossbow deer, a 9 point. This deer had some nerve not growing both G3's - he could have been a 10-point! By midnight Dad had the whole deer butchered, wrapped and in the refrigerator, head caped and skull/antlers salted.

This morning my Dad got up early and went to look for the first deer again!
