It was cold this morning, by South Carolina standards anyway, somewhere around 24 degrees. I was positioned in my ground blind just off a one-acre clover and winter wheat food plot with the sun rising in the east...
As the sun light fully engulfed the piney woods, I heard movement off to my left... probably one of the local greys... or maybe one of the two fox squirrels that have kept me company the last two years. One is grey with a black face; the other is a huge male, black body with a white face. So, I slowly turned to the left and saw a yearling doe entering the food plot followed closely by another larger doe... then several more of this concoction walking in the edge of the woods heading in. They are at 30 yards when I first see them and closing in fast... don't move a muscle... I'm on the ground and they have me pegged... one last glance to the left as the last of the doe are walking out and I catch a glimpse of white polished antler floating through the air...

It's the best buck I've seen in my food plot in three seasons... it will be my third best archery buck ever... he will be my best buck with my crossbow...
I'm not good at controlling my emotions when an animal I want to kill comes in... doe, buck, turkey... whatever. I've made some bad shots... I've missed, and I have been lucky a few times... What I have to do now is calm down... I tell myself this several times... kind of a mantra for the deer fever that's coursing through me...
He's not a monster... a good 8 point though... and I would really love to close out the season with him.
So, with the birds chirping, the grey fox squirrel now jumping through the pine straw, perched on a fallen tree to my right, and the sun warming everything in its path... I raised the bow and I killed him.
Congratulations and send some of that good luck up to Ontario
Canada .

Nice buck! Congrats on the harvest and the well placed shot. I'd put my last buck tag on him any season if I'm using archery equipment. I never saw one that size all season, not even on my trail camera.
