Vertical Bow Hunters Help

Post by ko4nrbs »

I've grown defensive when I bump into a vertical bow hunter in the woods. This was brought on by some of the rude comments and rolling eyes I have run into in the past.

After I got the small swamp buck back to the truck a vertical bow hunter was there waiting for his hunting partner. He was very interested in my hunt and congratulated me. Wanted to know what crossbow I was using and how the broadhead performed. It was very apparent this guy loved hunting. He was quite taken with my Sherpa Hunting Cart climbing tree stand wheel kit and when his partner showed up it was the topic of the conversation.

He offered to help me load the deer in the truck and I quickly accepted the offer. They were hunting about 2 miles North from where I was so they wouldn't have to walk around all the sloughs. He told me there was a lot of deer in there and the rut was in full swing. This guy and his partner were some of the friendliest hunters I have ever run across. I guess being defensive when talking to vertical bow hunters is my problem and not theirs.

Most people are just like that, but you will always run into the one guy that wants to talk about himself being some type of “purist” yet he has a new $1500. Dollar bow that shoots around 370 FPS. Compound of course, the best way to get to them is to be as nice as possible and ask them how many deer have they taken with their contraption.

Someone who understands archery will realize the tactics are the same no matter what is launching the arrow. When I use my vertical bow I have to be a little more exposed, have to be a little quieter and careful about movement, and lose about 10 minutes of legal light due to sights. If I get a old deer with the vertical bow I know I was on my game and did everything right. With the crossbow you do everything right before you get there. It’s still the flight of the arrow that finishes the job. I love and respect crossbows and those that use them. I understand everyone wants to be successful and does what they think gives them the edge. We’re all in it together. My Dad says “ they paid their 11% just like we did”. USA residents should get that

Here in AZ, most vertical bow hunters have basically drawn the line in the sand.

Not all but the majority don't think it should ever be legal during an archery season.

I'm not going to go thru all the pros and cons but I doubt there will be a crossbow hunting season anytime soon, here in Az. Other than our ham hunt for piggy.
Ham being handgun archery or muzzleloader.
Its still not a headliner , lol. It's own season.

Its a legal weapon for most general hunts, As an option.
But you don't see many using a crossbow instead of a rifle.

Years ago I got into bow hunting for a few reasons. One was to get a chance at a buck before all the hammerheads hit the woods, and of course warmer weather and the extra month of opportunity. There were very few people in those years, and you had to get a medical permit or be over 60 to hunt with a crossbow. When the state made it all inclusive we thought we were going to see a lot more people, but that didn’t happen. It really didn’t make it any easier to harvest deer! Oh the smart asses came out in droves, but that settled down rather quickly.

Whenever i run into people like that i just tell them
when you can't draw your bow anymore, just stay home in your
rocking chair and wish you could still hunt,
(OR) get you a crossbow and stay in the game :eusa-shifty:

I do need to add that use of a crossbow on any hunt is possible .

You must get a signed medical disability waiver.
Stated you cannot draw a vertical bow. Of 40 lbs or something

Only problem, a lot of hunters have doctors who sign anything if asked
