The Countdown

Post by Hatchet »

Welllll....89 days til spring turkey opens here. All the bows are ready and now we are just getting the ATV's sorted for when the trails open. Just loading wood stoves clearing snow and getting out for some exercise with the dog when the wind isn't roaring.

Hows about you? When does your turkey season open? You gonna be chasin them spring gobblers? Any turkey advice to share with us young fellers? What's your weapon of choice for turkeys? What's your favorite call?
Do you have a good Turkey hunting story?

Hoping you all are well
Take care

Turkey season opener always falls around my Birthday, yet my BD gift never gets fulfilled because I'm the worlds unluckiest Turkey hunter in Ontario.

Are you still planning to use the SWAT Juggernaut?

Good luck Hatch, until I get over these dizzy spells I’m not going to hunt with a gun, which is the only season for turkeys in Indiana until fall. This is a condition that reared it’s ugly head again recently.
Enough whining, good luck all you spring turkey hunters!

March 22 here in South Carolina... I just came in from shooting my Ibex at 40 and 50 yards getting ready. Shot my Phoenix and Vortex at the same distances yesterday. It will be one of my Excals with a 2" cut Swhacker on Zombie's ... the problem is, which bow should I take???

Primos Spring Hen... it's a little black plastic push button call... just plain deadly. Makes really sweet purrs and clucks...

I still love Shotgun hunting turkeys. One of my favorites. This winter I scored 3 more Avian-X dek's off the local classifieds. So I'm pretty much set for life now.
The Versamax I had done by TacOrd is a complete game changer for me. I love my 870, and my 1187, but this beast just puts them to shame, and it doesn't hurt you for thee days if you're up against a tree when the shot happens.

April 25th I'll be in my blind with the Remington 870 20 Guage.

I missed the entire spring turkey hunt in 2021...:(

Norm I do plan on using the Swat Juggernaut with my Lil BD and getting something with a larger cut for my BD400 and my latest acquisition a Micro 360. Any recommendations? I usually get at least one turkey but the last couple years I've been trying to decapitate one with no luck! Going back to body shots this year...I think...maybe??? Good luck to you Norm. This could be your year!

Flinthead...April 22!!! Boy you guys get an early start compared to us Mainuhs. It sounds like you and I have our work cut out for us deciding which Excal to use.
Good luck to you!

Dan I'm sorry to hear about the dizzy spells man. I will be praying that you make an amazing recovery. God bless ya!

Janesy that's a sweet shotgun man. Not surprised you love using it for turkeys! Looks like a deadly pattern in that pic! Good luck out there!

Jeff sorry to hear you missed the 2021 season. Hoping you make up for it this season with a extra successful 2022 season! Good luck.

Robert I'd wish you good luck but man you dont need it. You always find a way to put somethin on the ground whether its turkeys or deer. In the spirit of this thread I'm gonna wish you good luck anyway Robert. 😂

I'm hoping everyone is doing as well as they can given their unique circumstances and with all that's happening in the World these days. Wont be long and we'll all be enjoying that wonderful summer sunshine again.
Take care

Thanks Hatchet. I'm a victim of my own doing in ways, and I'll push through this. I have to sight in my shotgun, or use one of the Kid's, hoping that the warmer temperatures in Spring motivate me more to get back to being game ready. I often think that I have some depression going on, and need to focus more on that. Anyway, if I can't get out I will certainly cheer for the rest of you folks!

Unless I'm not understanding what your saying, you CAN hunt with archery/crossbow in our spring season? The fall season is archery only, except for the short (limited county) gun season.

Nope, gun only in the spring, either one in the fall. This is the information I got from my friends. I’m going to read the hunting guide to make sure, things change.

Decided to check it right away. It seems spring is gun only state wide, and fall there is a split season, gun in only certain counties. You can get the scoop at indnr.

Check again. Your reading it wrong. Just trying to help out if it gets you in the field more. Spring IS shotgun, bow, or crossbow in Indiana. This is copied right out of the guide.

Turkeys can be hunted only with:

A 410 caliber and 10-, 12-, 16-, 20-, or 28-gauge shotgun loaded with pellets of size No. 4, 5, 6, 7, 7½, and Tungsten Super Shot 9 and 10. Non-toxic shot is required while hunting turkey on some DNR properties. Call the property you are interested in hunting on for additional information.
A muzzleloading shotgun not smaller than 20-gauge and not larger than 10-gauge, loaded with pellets of size 4, 5, 6, 7, 7½, and Tungsten Super Shot 9 and 10. Combination loads using shot sizes other than these are illegal.
