Turkey Practice

Post by flinthead »

Trying to nail down which bow for this year's season, so I spent most of the afternoon on my bow range. My 14-year-old daughter wants to hunt this year, so I have been practicing with her for the last several weeks... she is really drilling the vitals with the Vixen!! I have my Ibex set up with a Tac-Bracket and a green LED light for hogs this summer... so that leaves me with the Phoenix and the Vortex. Shot both of those quite a bit... both shoot great, but I think I'll go with the Vortex for a little extra speed and less critical yardage mistakes. Found out today my max distance is going to be 50 yards with the small vitals of a turkey... out past that, yardage becomes real factor. I use a Leupold range finder... but man, a couple of steps can really change the impact location out that far... plus, I also start to worry about penetration at those longer distances. I also shot all the 5's between 20 and 50 yards to make sure they were dead on. Youth day is March 19th, so my daughter and I will be out with the Vixen to try for her first turkey... then me and the Vortex will hit opening day on March 22nd. Good luck on your turkey birds this year guys!!

What are you putting on the end of your arrows? I've used 1.5" G5 Striker Magnums with good success but found out that an arrow with a Swat Crossbow Magnum really has a hard time passing through at 40 yards hitting at the base of the wing.

My Vortex will have 2” green Swhackers and Hannah will be shooting 1.75” crossbow Swhackers from the Vixen… both with 20” Zombies. I’m limiting her to a max 20 yard shot.

I'm pretty sure I won't use mechanicals again or at least big mechanicals. The turkeys I shot with the G5 Magnums only went 20 yards but a complete pass through. The 2 I shot with the Swats still had the rear part of the arrow still stuck in the body. Mind you they didn't make it 5'. Maybe for fun I'll try some Titanium Hybrids.

I gotcha Mr. Boo! But I’ll make a deal right now for a 5’ recovery on opening day!! :P

I shot my turkey last year with a 2” Rocket Meat Seeker at 33 yards with my Ibex… blew right through with a 5’ recovery.

The Magnus Bull Head for me . I am making up some new arrows for them this year . I shoot a lot of turkeys and none of them more than 12yards . Shoot them in the head and you have no damage to the meat at all and they fall where they stand . But that’s me you should shoot what works for you . Good luck with your hunt .

Don I think those Titanium Hybrids will do a number on a turkey and cut a huge hole. My wife has killed close to a dozen deer with them.

I use rage hypos for my turkey hunting. I have taken several turkeys with these heads and vertical bow. Every turkey i shot was DRT, didn't go more than a foot.
I haven't taken a turkey yet with crossbow, but i will use the crossbow exclusively this year.
Good luck this season.

Ironically l usually use my fastest bow for turkey hunting my matrix 355 only because it's fast and l have less scope error on such a small target I practice a lot shooting for spring turkey and if a bird hangs up and offers me a 30 yard shot l will not hesitate.
The benefits of the vixen are that its easy to cock in a blind if you should get a second shot both bows have killed many turkey spring and fall no wrong choice Also the matrix is a tad narrower in the blind.
I will be using the big swat A-4 chisle tips again or the b52 looking superfreaks both turkey killers.
Last year l used my tiny 305 fps sapphire for one of my short distance blinds but had not had a chance to shoot it at a bird.
Vixen 2, metal ibex,Phoenix, sapphire, matrix 330 ,matrix 355 ,vortex and baby grand piano y25 relayer.

Here are two shot with an Excalibur and a Ravin. Both using Hypos. The one shot in the back ran almost 30 yards and the other just started flopping immediately. Last 2 are the same bird.
