No October Lull Yet.....

Post by nchunterkw »

For what ever reason, acorns are falling like crazy here in NC right now. Seems to be a bit late, but I'll take it. I've got acorns all over my spots and the deer are hitting them like crazy too. .

I decided to leave work early on Friday and headed up to my lake shore neighborhood spot. We got up there by 4PM and I got my newbie setup in the treestand he's been sitting in (and seeing deer). Aside...I added lifelines to my stands....easy to make and a great thing to have in place I tnink...........

SO I got over to a new treestand that I hadn't sat yet this year. Had to trim some trees to create some lanes but finally got all settled in by 4:45 or so. The weather was gorgeous, low 60's, sunny and not windy. All was very quite. Perfect day....until......."mower guy" decides he needs to mow the grass along the sides of the road. Up and down cutting about a 1/2 mile stretch of road to my left....of course where the deer are likely to come from. Up and down, over and over.....then he cuts the road behind me. Back and forth.... He's cutting for easliy an hour, probably longer. The sun seems to be going down. I keep telling myself the deer are used to this but it's hard not to get frustrated....he finally stops cutting the road and then "blower guy" fires up his backpack blower 2 houses up. The leaves have just started falling....and many many more to come...so I don't understand why these guys feel the need to clean every leaf off the lawn when in a hour there will be more down....but anyway to each his own.
I start thinking that he's far enough up that he might actually keep deer out of the yard feeder and send them into my woods when I look left and see 2 deer coming from that direction. They are to my left and back a bit and in lots of brush. I think "hey you don't want to be there, you want to go eat all these acorns in front of me", when one of then turns and starts moving that direction. Moving isn't quite right. The 2 deer ended up being 4 and they literally ran over to the acorn patch. A small buck trotted in first but turn facing away from me. Then a doe followed him. They were around 30yards. Then a nice doe trotted in and stopped broadside at 20 yards, I went right up the leg and middle body and let fly with another VPA 200gr 3 blade. HUGE mule kick and she took off straight away from me. I thought I saw blood on her as she ran. "She ain't going far". I watch her and the others run as far as I can see and about 10 seconds later the other 3 took off hard to the left. I immediately start getting down and take off my harness etc and leave it all at the base of the tree. I only grab my headlamp, knife and gloves. The arrow passed through, hit the side of the big tree behind her and ricocheted left at a 45 and buried in an old log. Thankfully I could get it out, and the BH looks perfect. Blood is good. I go back to where she stood and there is blood all over right where she stood and a great blood trail that anyone could follow for about 50-60 yards. Thankfully she didn't make it to the pines. Post mortem showed I hit both lungs and the top of the heart. Exactly what I wanted. A quick field dressing job, and I go back to get my things and take them to the truck. Drive down the road a bit and make the 60 yard drag with her and get her loaded up. Picked up my buddy and got her home an hour later and by 10PM had her quartered up and in the cooler.

Just a nice day....
Keith

Nice job Keith!!

Got to love when a new stand pays off despite all the mowing and yard work going on.
Congratulations on the doe harvest and good shooting.

Congratulations
When I'm hunting in suburbs that stuff is all normal ...no worries many times people doing just what you described just sends the deer your way it's all good.
One year l had a dude in a suite walking through my woods with a camera when he disappeared a 23 inch wide 8 came running in and l wacked him l love that stuff.
Across the river from me is a Latin night club at 430 the Latin music starts hopping and the deer start moving that instant ..I'm not making this up they love the music lol.
