Playing the hand we're dealt (weather) [SCORED]

Post by DuckHunt »

Well, my archery season ends Friday and I'm on my next to last sit. It's almost 70F degrees and breezy, but the only option I have is to not go.

We're not seeing much daylight movement yet. The leaves are coming off the trees sooner than last year despite the mild weather.

If this trend continues, this will be the first year since I bought an Excalibur that I didn't take a deer during archery season. I did take one with my Micro 380 during the early gun doe season and harvested a bear of a lifetime for me, so I can't complain. And my son has been in my stand (his now) twice as much as I have and has taken four deer. It has been a great season if it ended today.

But until the big lady sings, I've got about four more hours of stand time until orange invades the wardrobe.

Definitely too warm. No luck here either...

It's been the same here in MN. Much needed cold front finally coming in Friday. The woods are going to light up.

Last year I scored a nice 7pt buck on the last day of archery season, so I don't know why I expected this season to be any different. After seeing nothing for the third straight sit, I started slipping out about 15 minutes after sunset. As I crested over the ridge and started descending a steep portion, a deer jumped within bow range to my left and ran out not much more than 40 yards and stopped. It was a clear day, so I still had more light than normal but it was still pretty dim. I could tell it was a decent sized deer, and that's all I needed to know. I continued descending while nocking an arrow hoping that the deer would just watch me walking by. I've seen and done this multiple times before. I made the left turn on our trail at the bottom of the hill and kept walking on a path that would bring me to within 10 yards of the deer if it didn't move. I proceeded to walk to within 20 yards, raised my bow and let it fly. I hit a touch high since I didn't have my illumination on and forgot that the center crosshair on a Vortex Crossfire is 40y. He was also uphill from me which causes some backwards shot angles.

He tore down the hill and I thought he was going to pile up not 20y in front of me. But he gathered himself and stumbled down the trail heading in the direction of the truck. In all, he made it about 100 yards from the point of impact. It ended up being a 7pt. That's all for me this archery season. A little luck was all I needed.

Just haven't had a lot of time to go hunting this year. :eusa-doh:

If it's NOT raining, I'm working! I've got about another 4 days on one house and then it's a go to start a 10,000 square foot home up on Lake Bob Sandlin. And with the weather changing, I'm pretty sure this is gonna be a slow season. On both construction and hunting!

The upside is once the lake house is finished, I'm retiring... AGAIN!!
This time for good!! :eusa-dance:
