Elusive Swamp Deer

Post by ko4nrbs »

The areas I hunted last year had lots of scrapes, rubs, etc. This year all I am finding is a track or two. The fields were in corn last year but this year it’s soybeans. I got sick at Thanksgiving, just now feeling ok. I have only been out a couple of times but hope to get out after the rain stops. Been getting lots of rain.

The deer herds in the refuge are small and scattered so it’s very challenging to find them. The area is wetlands with fields on the high ground. Rubber boots and in many cases hip waders are required. The only woods is the small wood lots that separates the fields.

Going to scout a few more areas. My mistake was to get complacent and think nothing had changed. At my age I should of learned that lesson long ago!!

Good luck Bill.

Glad you're feeling better!!

Around here we are also desperate, it has been raining non-stop for a month, I can only go out to work just enough and with the fishing wader, because in the farm plots you sink up "to your ears".

On Monday I tried to change the area wild boar feeder and got stuck with the van. For fool!!

Good luck with the rains, I hope you can get out soon and find the deer!!

I have a long 2 mile corridor that has been a gravy top notch producer in our swamp over the years I generally don't set foot in there unless it's to just jump in stand and hunt.
It was basically lousy this year so I ended up deeper in the swamp...it paid off with my nice buck and ended up great but I'm still puzzled about why the corridor was so lame.
I did a push for my brother last week and saw very little rubs and sign ..no crops are involved in this scenario either might have something to do with acorns or honey locust mass..
Who knows that's why you will never figure this stuff out.
