Kudos to West Grey Police

Post by Species8472 »

So had an unexpected break in my afternoon schedule today and was in the vicinity of our camp so thought i would shoot in and do some routine scouting. Pulled up to the gate and it was locked and secure as per normal but about 100 yards up the driveway i could see what looked like a log lying on the driveway. Opened up the gate and drove ahead and it was a cedar rail from the fence line which is about 5 yards west of the driveway at that spot. Looked closer and it was clear someone had driven a machine through the neighbour's bush and through the fence onto our property. There were lots of downed small trees all pointed in our direction with lots of bark scraped off. Immediately i got a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach.

Drove ahead to the cabin and my fears were confirmed. Cabin door was open and going around back of the cabin my 900cc Diesel Kubota 4x4 Side by Side was gone. I had just dropped it off a week earlier for the season. Went inside the cabin careful not to touch anything and the place had been tossed. Nothing of too much value is ever stored there but 7 solar panels were taken, 200 amp hour of deep cycle battery gone and a 1500 watt pure sine inverter gone as well.

So timeline was nobody had been at camp in 8 days. I arrived today at 1:20 pm. Called cops (via dispatch not 911) at 1:25 pm. Constable arrived at 1:45 pm. Took constable through the scene and answered questions gave statement until 2:05 pm. Constable gets a call and informs me last night they raided what she called a rat's nest about a mile away and have recovered everything! Really just some clean up required and repairs to the door and door frame - no need to even call insurance in.

Day sucked but man i was impressed with our local rural police force. I made sure she knew it too. Getting my stuff back tomorrow!

I hate thieves!
A touch of frost has heightened your awareness and your heart steadily beats in anticipation. Your senses are suddenly alert to the movement on the forest floor and you realize that the moment of truth is at hand.

Number 1... Glad no one was injured in this escapade.
Number 2... Glad you got your stuff back!! Wow, that was quick!! :eusa-dance:
Number 3... Kudo's to your local law enforcement for being "Johhny on the spot"!!

Thieves are the worst. If you are so lazy you are not willing to work for what you want, then I have no pity on you! It should be a mandatory jail sentence for burglary. If you will "violate" a person's home or residence, you will violate an individual's person. You need to be locked away like the animal you are!!
No probation. No leniency.
As Jack Lord used to say on Hawaii 5-0, "Book 'em Danno"!!

A fortunate ending to an unfortunate incident. Still, it would make me feel anxious. Maybe some cell cams would be appropriate if you have service?

Thieves suck! You were lucky with the outcome.

As I passed someone painting graffiti in an inner city this week, I couldn't help but wonder if losing an index finger on the painting hand might cut down on the problem.

Crimes that willfully disregard others property need a punishment that criminals will remember.

Just got home with the RTV on the float. All the serial/VIN numbers have been removed and it has been painted mat black LOL. I am OCD about maintenance records which was helpful in proving it was mine and getting it released. Over the phone i was able to tell cops make, model and size/profile of the tires on the unit, make and model of the battery, and the location and size/shape of 2 dents in the roof that my son put on the unit 5 years ago. Was also able to give them the exact hours on it when i last saw it 9 days ago. That was more than enough for the cops regardless of no serial/VIN number. I also had the original bill of sale from 2009 confirming model.

So on Monday i will take it to the dealer and have them do a once over to make sure there is no hidden damage. It started fine and drove onto the trailer fine so not too worried.

Thieves do suck, had a few break ins as well here, glad you got your stuff back and hopefully a good pressure wash will take off the matt black paint.

The thieves are likely locals who saw ya drop off the Kubota which really sucks. Hope cell cam(s) work for you.

I don't know if this is still done but in the town of Clayton, Ontario, the MNR would set up a roadblock to check everyone for hunting licences etc. This was done with the OPP. The main purpose was to check VINs on quads. Apparently the found quite a few every year. Theft, especially in remote areas is very common. It's a wake up call to make sure your stuff is insured or protected somehow.

……In the end, a great story Joe….if I didn’t know better I would have thought you were in TPROfNJ….unfortunately in todays liberal world…the criminals will just get written up and be back doing what they do best….
