Swamp Bucks

Post by ko4nrbs »

I hunt the swamps now here in Northern Alabama. While the past two seasons is not a long hunt history I have been surprised by their sudden appearance when they do show up. The area goes from no fresh sign at all in the woods to being covered in rubs and scrapes almost overnight. Most of it is done at night I believe.

I plan on doing dark to dark sits as long as the weather and my stamina hold out. It’s the only way I know to hunt unpredictable deer patterns.

Last year I saw several 8 to 10 feet diameter scapes here with lots of accompanying rubs and worn licking branches.

Good luck Bill ..
This is my biggest swamp buck so far very nice 8 point but not worth the effort to get him out.
I'm alternating nights between the industrial park and the deep swamp each one has a lot of deer this year.
I heard a rumor that my big buck I was after was possibly killed so I'm probably gonna have to lower my standards a little .

I have a Sherpa cart kit for my Summit Viper and a sled so I can get them out ok. Fortunately the area has several raised roads for the farmers in the refuge. Once you get off the roads it is wet and thick.

Missed a doe this morning. My fault 100%.
At least I am seeing deer.

I hope I am correctly figuring out their pattern. Looks like they are in the corn and soybean fields at night and use the wood lot strips to travel to and from their bedding areas. They like to bed in areas bordered by water on at least one side from what I have seen.

Back at it again tomorrow in my other spot. Thought I should let this spot cool off for a few days. As we get closer to the rut these little wood lots are covered with scrapes and rubs.
