I wish I'd gotten him with an Excal'

Post by grouse »

This year it's been difficult for me to get a legal deer (4 pts on one side or antlerless) into range of my crossbow. I could have killed several smaller bucks that I couldn't be sure were legal and the does seem pretty scarce. Firearms season opened last Saturday, and I shot a nice fat doe that morning to be sure my freezer wouldn't be empty. There are lots of rubs and scrapes around and I (unintentionally) pushed a big buck off a scrape right by our farm house while walking back from a morning crossbow hunt.

I drove back up to the farm yesterday ready to hunt until Saturday afternoon. I got into my stand around 3pm and at 3:30 one of the small bucks walked out into the harvested crop field in front of me. Shortly, a doe joined him and I was pretty sure I would end up shooting one or the other. The buck clearly had 3 points on either side, but I couldn't tell if he had brow tines. I went from binoculars to scope several times to try to determine if he was legal. While I was trying to figure out what to do, I saw a third deer step out into the field. This deer was huge, clearly legal and only about 75 yards away. The safety came off on my Tikka .270 and he was down after 3 or 4 staggering steps.

He was only a 9 pointer with 4 pts on each main beam but only one brow tine. He was so big that I struggled to get him to fit into my little Kubota's bucket. I have pictures if anyone wants to post them because I have never mastered the art of posting pictures on his site.

Congrats!!

I'll send you a pm regarding the pictures.

Be patient though as I will be hunting this evening again.

Cheers

That's a big deer. I wouldn't want to have to deal with him alone. Congrats on the bruiser!

Impressive!
A touch of frost has heightened your awareness and your heart steadily beats in anticipation. Your senses are suddenly alert to the movement on the forest floor and you realize that the moment of truth is at hand.
