Corn Harvest Hunt - No shot

Post by Sandman »

Morning all,

I rec'd a message from my son-in-law that they would be harvesting the corn at their main farm. I love hunting a corn harvesting field. I was pretty confident that the big buck I have been hunting was in the corn due to all the sign and camera intell I had. I picked a nice big oak and settled in for the afternoon hunt. Shout out to Much for the Munch Mount.

Once the head rows were off a nice doe squirted out the opposite side of the field and into the adjacent corm field.

My SIL was nice enough to combine so that the unharvested rows stayed close to me.

As the field dwindled and was down to 36 rows the John Deere tractor and buggy pulled up and stopped on the opposite side of me and parked waiting for the combine and then it happened.

The high 8 I have been hunting came out from the leftover rows at approx 22 yards from me. I gave a baaah and he stopped. I puled my bow up and was about to take the safety off and realized in the background was the John Deere and buggy.

Pounded into me for 33 years of employment and firearms requal was be sure of your backstop. I put my bow down and watched the big guy disappear into the unharvested corn field.

As my daddy use to say - "That's why they call it hunting and not killing". It was an exciting hunt none the less .....

Cheers.

It's a bit of a bummer for sure, but you got a free shot of adrenaline! You have another month and a bit to even the score!

Reminds me of the time I was hunting a field edge. The farmer started to disc his field so I decided to move. As soon as I moved a big buck and doe showed up 20 yards from where I moved from... lol
A touch of frost has heightened your awareness and your heart steadily beats in anticipation. Your senses are suddenly alert to the movement on the forest floor and you realize that the moment of truth is at hand.

I love hunting the first outside cut corn edges, easy to make a impromptu corn blind
