How do you keep your feet warm?

Post by AJ01 »

As I have gotten older, I noticed my hands and feet get colder quicker than they used to, but my hands aren't my problem. A hand muff with some rechargeable hand warmers take care of this. They stay nice and toasty. I'm not fond of wearing gloves while I hunt. I seem to lose the "touch" I feel I need when working the trigger!! Hence, the muff.

Now my feet... I have wool socks and I wear liners under the wool. And I wear insulated Danner's. But it doesn't take long for my feet to turn to ice.
A lot of it has to do with my Hypothyroidism. According to the medical folks, it alone makes my hands and feet cold. I do take meds for this, but the problem still rears its ugly head.
I was in the tree stand the other morning when temps were near freezing. I know "about freezing" ain't cold to my Brothers in The Great White North, but to this old Texas boy, it made my feet feel like a block of ice. I was miserable! :eusa-doh:

So, to you brave folks that sit out in sub-zero weather, what's the remedy?
“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming "Wow, What a Ride!

A couple things I might suggest.

First, battery heated insoles .

If your feet sweat bring a backup pair of dry socks to switch out. Boot dryers between hunts make a big difference.

Rubber boots with high insulation such as the LaCrosse Alpha Burly Pro 1600 gr is what my wife and I wear when it's downright cold out.

A quality sock such as the Marino Darn Tough heavy Hunter over the calf sock is suggested.

Wiggle your toes ever few minutes before they start getting cold.

The chemical heaters work great if you have good boots. I put them under my toes on the walk in, and they work for hours in my Mucks. The best thing i have found though is to not go hunting in the cold.

Cold feet ruin everything. :eusa-popcorn:

This is an issue for me too. I was looking at getting some boot blankets to use on stand to help keep my feet warm

I read a book written by one of the wensels years ago where he dusted his feet every night with alumn powder
I believe it basically clogged up your pores and basically "tanned" your feet into not sweating making a huge difference.
I might look into this myself again..I remember trying this in the 90s and it actually worked very well .
No sweat...no cold feet!
The real cure is to not be picky and shoot the animals earlier in the season..I'm working on that.

Wool socks with heat pads on toes. I wear rocky 1200 gr thinsalte boots. Today it's 32* so I'm going out for the last 2 1/2 hours to kill whatever comes by. I'm getting tired of waiting for the big one.

Baffin Titan and Muck artic pro may do the trick, if you don't do a lot of walking the black mickey mouse boots or the white bunny boots should keep your feet warm. The white ones are warmer than the black ones, but both are getting harder and harder to find.

I too am having a tougher time each year with the cold as I get older. I personally have to pack all my cold weather gear into my knapsack and will dress once I am in my climber as I am a sweater if there is such a word. I have a fairly pricey set of rechargeable socks that seem to hold the charge for the duration of my hunts. I also put 2 heating pads in my gloves which help quite a bit. As mentioned the boot dryers are a must.

I use irish setter 800gr rut master boots or Irish Setter elk tracker boots, heated insoles with quality wool over the calf socks. I can sit all day with these with no issues...

Like everyone else said, boot driers. Dry boots are much warmer than damp ones. Other than appropriately warm boots, I use extra insoles and when it gets real cold I use insulated booties that go over my boots. I also put my feet into my padded bow case. I’ve always wanted to try heated insoles but reviews are all over the map on them.

They make heated sleeping bags now.

Many to choose from on Amazon. I may try one in my blind instead of the propane heater. Be nice in a tree stand to.

To increase the battery life you can connect a suitable battery holder in parallel with the existing battery. I did that with my heated insoles. Worked great. Just use how ever many batteries it takes to equal the voltage of the supplied battery.
