My scouting and hunting of the swamp has been very revealing. I finally have a much better idea about the deer’s patterns and movements. They use the wood lots to travel between the crop fields with canals, creeks or soughs on at least one side. Water on two sides is more preferable based on the sign. I found the deer in the furthest corner of a corn field in between two wood lots. Many of the wood lots are fairly small being around 100 yards or so wide and maybe 300 yards long. A few are much longer but not much wider.
In short they have mastered the terrain so their movements greatly minimize showing themselves. In addition for the most part you can only get to them using the refuge roads which are closed this time of year. They can see and hear you coming as soon as you leave the truck.
