50 Caliber wads

Post by Boo »

Does anyone know where I can find unlubricated 50 caliber wool wads in Canada? I want to put them between the sabot and the powder. Any leads would be appreciated!

If you can't find precut wool wads, see if you can find a source for 1/8" dura-felt and make your own using a 1/2" round hole punch.
Do a GOOGLE search > dura felt for muzzleloaders, there is a bunch of info. about it.

Don, that store is just a few miles down the road from me. If they won't ship to Canada, let me know and I can grab as many bags as you need and mail them to you.

Thank you for the help everyone. I found a place in Ontario. Pretty interesting that wads are rarely used under a sabot or ball but anyone who shoots a lot and tries it notices an increase of accuracy.

That's interesting....maybe I'll have to give that a try too.

Apparently, the hotter the load, the greater the benefit.

Yes they work very well. I shoot them with R.E.A.L slugs. They shrunk my groups quite a bit. I think because it makes a better seal.

Should I be using those in my Savage 10MLii? :)

It is supposed to create a better seal, stop damage to the base of the wad and reduce deformation of the bullet.
Jeff, if you want an accurate bullet, look at the 260 gr, 40 caliber Dead Center bullet. I’m going to stop using them because they blow up leaving a fist sized hole at exit. Every Deer I shot dropped and never got up but the meat destruction is too much for me. I was using 40 gr of N110 so it wasn’t nearly top load and I wasn’t using a wad. That load was very accurate but too effective for my liking.
