Best excalibur crossbow for big game hunting?

Post by drewdavis »

Hi fellas

I am trying to buy a used excalibur (for the warranty) recurve crossbow. Not sure which model to get, and which accessories are useful. I will use it to hunt deer and boars mostly. Your advice would be super helpful.

Crossbow Buying is really a personal choice. If you live near an Excalibur dealer shoulder each model to see what fits you best. Lots of options to choose from.

If it were me I would go with the new Suppressor extreme. Excellent price point for this bow with all the accessories included and the Katana style stock fits me like a glove..

The Mag 340 has been filling freezers since it's inception and not one person has said it wasn't fast enough. That been said, I think the Micro 380 is the best value if speed is important to you. Speed is rarely important but it is entertaining and can extend your killing range by a small amount.

If it fits you then it would be the one that you are holding. Everyone is different.

I have a couple of different Excals.
I bought a 340 a while back. I find myself shooting it more than the others. Why?
Cause it's just fun to shoot.
It's easier to "rope cock" and easier to de-cock with the same rope.
Accuracy is exceptional. Not matter what head I feed it.
I haven't killed any BIG critters with it. Nothing in the 500 pound plus range but would use it without reservation.
All in all, I would have to give the 340 with a good scope an A+ in the crossbow world for hunting!

One can find used Excalibur bows in every budget or price range.

They will all kill big game with a well placed arrow.

Any well placed arrow will dispatch larger game . Just don`t be confused thinking the faster it is the more penetration from a shoulder hit . I have talked to a few people who think they can do a shoulder shot with a bow . It will end in disappointment more often than not .
A wise person once told me the faster the arrow just means it goes into the ground deeper on the other side . I have had passthroughs with my wooden wolverine as well as my newer bows .

Yes this! And even if you opt for an older Excalibur, the 330-340 fps range has kind of been a sweet spot. Older wide limb Exocet snd Vortex are great bows. The Mattix 330 is smaller and still easy to cock.jmho

Mag340 is easy to find used. Best bang the buck all around hunting bow is the Micro Extreme.

My thoughts may be a little outdated these days… but if you can find a metal rail Ibex, get it! Just a great all around bow for hunting or targets.

I have to say that any Excalibur would do. It really depends on how much you have to spend and how you hunt. If you hunt in a blind vs. a tree stand, you might opt for a smaller width bow. How far are you shooting, is another question. If you have longer shots, I will get a little faster crossbow. An all-around crossbow would be in the 340-fps range. If you can aim it, your Excalibur will kill it. I have an old Grizzly that does the job for me and maybe one day I'll upgrade it. It sounds goofy but keep your choice simple and I think you'll be happy with any crossbow. Good luck!
