Mountain Bike Hunting

Post by Tar Heel »

I am thinking about trying a mountain bike next year, the forest service keeps putting more gates up and closing acess to vehicles, a bike would give me access to a lot more hunting, a bow rack and a few modifications
on the bike might do it.
Has anybody tried one.

Not only tried it , but done it. I use mountain bikes for upland bird, (grouse). Here its legal to carry a gun on your back, while hunting, just as long as its not loaded. Its a great way to keep in shape, save some money on fuel, and much easier on the environment.

Mountain Bikes

We use bikes for our moose hunting, as you say it,s getting hard to hunt because of gates going up all over the north.Pirvate lodges up here in Canada seem to have the right to gate roads to stop motorized vehicals, but they can not stop us from walking or rideing our mountain bikes. I use a mtn bike here in FL and love it. I hunted this year in some places that were closed to vehicles due to high water in the hurricanes and had the places virtually all to myself. I did well on the hogs & deer :o). I plan to turkey hunt this spring on the bike. Riding a quarte mile at a time and using a locator call. When I get an answer, I'll slip in a ways & set up to call him in. Sort of the way I've done it in a canoe for a good while. I noticed a bunch more bikes in the back of trucks toward the end of the season. They musta heard how well I did on mine

The roads where I hunt are hard lime rock (old logging rds) easy peddling & I even ride road tires. They are mostly closed to vehicle traffic. As for equipment, I carry a pack & have a small rack on the back. I can also pull my game trailer with it but never have. I usually bone out the hogs in the woods and put the meat in plastic bags and just pack it out. Deer, I haul out whole. As for a turkey hunt, you'd be welcome any time. Season runs Mar 19-Apr. 24. Last year most all the hens were already bred by opening and we didn't do much good but I think this year will be later. The hurricanes seem to have pushed everything else back including the rut (that's what we're blaming anyway :o).
