Re: 2010 Trophy Room
After two years, it has finally come together.
This was one of the ones to remember, but not for all the good reasons. First I was late getting started. I had a couple minutes of last minute things to do that ended up taking almost an hour. Then on my way to Sherburne (Louisiana public land), the interstate traffic stopped around 5 miles before my exit adding 30 minutes to my travel time. I decided that even though I was late I could setup and get a couple hours of stand time.
I drove my 4-wheeler to my super secret honey hole, and was greeted by two other ATVs, so I kept going. I scouted around for about 15 minutes in a new area and found some heavy traffic trails and needed to get setup quickly, it was already pushing 5:00 PM. This was my first time setting up with the Lone Wolf sticks and Millennium Lock-on. I only went up 2 sticks high for a total of about 10 feet off the ground.
Hearing noises to my right, I switched up to shoot left handed. At 6:30 I heard something coming quickly to my left. I saw the spike coming in fast, so I switched back to right handed. Just before I went to grunt he stopped about 20 yards straight in front of me. I put the Varizone crosshairs on him, and squeezed off an arrow. I heard it make contact and watched as he trotted off about 60 yards and out of sight. It punched through a rib and deflected my arrow a bit.
2008 Exomax, Varizone, Boo String, Ground Pounder, Cow Whacker tipped with a Rage 3-blade.

Got this nice 8 Point with my Exocet 200 from 25 yards using 2216 arrows and 150 grain Boltcutters. Recovery was 30 yards. I am very happy with this crossbow.

I went out Tuesday night after work in the high wind to a new spot that I have only hunted once before but is good for a south wind. I get a spot on the ground on the north end of the cover and figure the bucks will cruse this side of the woods to sent check the does.
Their was a lot of small under brush and I quickly clear two narrow shooting lanes and range check a few trees
I sit about an hour and a half and at last lite I see a white antler buck with good mass blow through my first lane before I knew what was happening but he was headed for lane # 2 at a good pace he was about to step into the next lane so I gave him a doe bleat to stop him but I blew to soon and he was obscured when he stopped only the white front portion of his rack visible this gave me a chance to get yardage bearings and he is at the 30 yard tree.A few seconds go by and he starts to move I shoot THUMP know I got a hit by the sound but feel I may have hit to far back when I play the mental rewind game , Bow hunter depression sets in, what to do it is almost dark I may have a gut shoot deer , sounded like a kettle drum when the bolt hit.
I pack up and go to where he was when I shot and tie a orange marking tape to a tree so I can find it again and go home pumped and depressed at the same time
I wait 2 hours and go back to search I find the tree with the marking tape and hang a chemical lite stick and start looking for blood and can not find it.
After sometime I find 1 drop that is when decide to just search ahead a bit with the light and finally see a brown hump then white antlers awesome
Depression gone real fast
He only went about 80 yards but in the dark you have to almost step on them to find them. He was all ready stiff with rigormortis when I found him it was a better hit than I thought clipped a lung through the liver exit in front of back hip.
I gut him out by head lamp lite and hang another chem lite stick over the Deer and head back to car for the game cart.
I did not get him out of the woods until 12.45.Get home and the family is all asleep I have no one to take pictures so I dig out a tripod take some photos and now have to skin him out It is warm and I have to butcher tomorrow time to call in and use a sick day got buck fever.
At 2:30 I am done with messing with the Deer and can relax.
This is my first year hunting with a crossbow second state land buck this season now I am out of tags and rifle season is 2 weeks away
A good problem to have I guess.
