Baiting Bears

Post by Shakky »

It looks like I'm going to pick up some land to hunt in Peterborough, Ontario. The people aren't hunters but they did mention that they saw bear tracks while out there. So I thought I would give bear hunting a try as the land is only about an hour away from my house.

Anyone have an idea of the bear population in the area? I didn't think there were many bears in that area of the province. Is this worth a try or are bears few and far between?

When do I start baiting them for the fall season and what works best? I would only be able to get out there once a week to refresh the baits. Any tips?

fish guts in burlap bags high up in trees to atract him
KFC cooking grease smeared all over the trees in your bait sight to keep his attention
Day old donuts to keep him, start (beg borrow steal ,lol ) picking them up 6 / 8 wks before using them/ freeze at ALL your freinds relatives etc/ quatity is the key the more bags of em the better.set them in a plastic drum wired to a tree, just setup a week b4 hunting then keep full.
donuts are small so he hangs around instead of grabbing a cow leg and leaving, lol.
set up a few stations for different winds and to get better results more hits/ depends how much property you have access to.
notice all the above is free just requires legwork.
if theres any farm mills around you can buy some bulk molasses too .
dont feed him garbage hit his sweet tooth you'll get him
GOOD LUCK

bait

I hunted and guided for bears in N. Sask. for about 10 years. We used 45 gal. drums with scraps from a butcher shop. Wire the drum to a tree and place in a v shape...making him give you a quartering away shot. Set the bait upwind from your stand. Bait it as soon as you can. We had bears coming back to baits 2 years after we quit baiting them at that site. They will make well worn trails...making it easy for you to use trail timers, if you wish or to determine which direction they are traveling. Some bears will use one trail coming in and another leaving. Once a week is OK but bears will definitely hit following your sounds..we always banged the barrel..kinda like...suppers on !!...and if you hunt for a week or so, only feed them small amounts per day, it helps force them to feed in the daylight...kinda like the early bird gets the worm kinda thing.

We once had a bear tuned to the sound of the quad. I sat with the hunter that nite and nothing....I left with the quad and the hunter said he saw the bear coming in as soon as the quad was heading over the hill. He knew by the sound that the quad hadn't left yet !! They can become very programmed.

Your correct bushmaster. The best bait I've ever used or heard of being used is beaver carcasses. Get a hold of a local trapper, and buy a few from him. Hang one up by its tail, and OH MAMA, they'll smell that a mile away. Beavers are bears natural food source. Another trick I've used is, take a 5 gal. pail, fill it with used restaurant cooking oil, mount it on the back of an ATV, poke a hole and insert a clear plastic fuel line and let the oil drip on the back tires of your ATV. Do a wide circle around your hunting area, any bear around will follow your ATV tracks right to the bait. (Or to the back of your truck).

Dry dog food, the cheap stuff, works well. It fills them up and the size of the kibble forces them to sit and eat. It also leaves their coat nice and shiney  !

Go to a meat packers plant. They will have fat, and bones and often will allow you to take as much as you want at a time. I've gone and taken 200lbs+ at a time. If I had more plastic totes I could have had a 1000lbs of scraps.

Leftovers from the dinner table. Put a garbage bag in the freezer and add to it any time you can.

Do you fish? After filleting your fish keep the rest, in the freezer. I don't think there is a limit on suckers. Catch'em and freeze them whole, they won't go to waste.

Road kill! On the way to your bait site if you happen across a coon, or squirrel or ground hog toss them in a garbage bag. I would avoid skunks personally.

Grease/oil from a deep fryer. Ask at local independant resturants. Pour the grease in the ground surrounding your bait pile. The bears step in it, and when they are done they leave behind a scent trail that other bears can follow right to your bait pile!

Cantaloupes!!

Bears will eat almost anything!!!
