What to do with road kill buck?

Post by Partikle »

My buddy works for the Ministry of Transportation and picks up road kill often but usually in the fall. They drop them off on ministry property in a rural area close to where we hunt and coyotes and birds usually feed on them. Here are some of them, you can see lots of them have smashed up legs:

A nice buck got hit last fall and has been sitting under the snow all winter. My buddy said he's mine if I want him. I was thinking of taking the antlers for rattling before he starts smelling really bad. You can see he has one broken tine on his left side but other then that he would have been a sweet buck to have harvested. His back legs were busted up bad and my buddy said he looks like he suffered, dragged himself into the ditch and died. It's sad that he died this way and was wasted the way he did but I'm sure he's half eaten by now since the snow started melting. This picture was taken last November.

I would grab the rack for sure!! I've done it before. Also grabbed some claws from a road kill bear!

i'd say go and use them, hey would make great rattling antlers or a deer you could practice euro mounting and if that didnt work good, cut off the antlers and rattle with them.

Don't let the horns go to waste! Shame the rest of the deer has to but, rattlin horns, good. Euro mount, just me but only if I shoot it. Or take the antlers and make a couple of knife handles. very cool. Last but not least, if ya take your hides in for hats, they also take the antlers for crafts. Some will even pay cash depending on the size of the horn... :)

My uncle used to get calls from the cops to pick up the road kills. We got some meat off a few of them. I would say take the rack, no use to anything but the rodents.

Partikle I don't
think that we have a deer dump like that one in our are--Kingston--Napanee area. Do you live near Lanark? I guess the deer are plentiful and a problem in that area. I'd take those antlers and am sure that I could find one of many uses for them. They'd look good on the end of my shed. :D  :!:

Yep, I say that rack would make a nice set of rattling antlers. Go and cut them off his head!.

Partikle, do you need any help with the antlers or any other set that's just laying there?
