Myth Busters and Robin Hooding Arrows

Post by Partikle »

Did anybody see MythBusters last night on Discovery channel? They were trying to do a Robin Hood with wooden arrows where the first arrow would totally split in 2. They explained how “Telescoping” it can be done with aluminium or graphite arrows and the odds were 1/3000. They were out of luck with the wooden arrows and they were shooting a compound bow from 15 feet! A 1 in 3000 chance of getting an aluminium arrow into the back of another? I guess they never used an Excalibur!!!!

In Split Arrow, the three" mythkateers" take their best shots at busting this myth again — with surprising results.

I believe the old arrows had a "self" nock, simply a groove cut in the end of the shaft. These would be farily easy to split. Today's plastic nocks make it almost impossible to split the arrow shaft. I have taken one side of a nock off, though.

.... or a Mathews!... :D

Hmmm, I guess this here was my one chance out of 3000... :D
I've also knocked out two nocks off two other arrows, close, but not quite close enough!...

I believe they were trying to duplicate a scene in an old Robin Hood movie and started out w/ historically correct arrows; wood shafts w/ nocks carved in, and then a piece of horn imbedded in shaft below the "v" nock/notch. I only caught glimpses of the show, but they came close a couple of times, and if I recall, had a guy w/ modern compound w/ either carbon or aluminum finally get the job done shooting at old time replica arrows
